The Aftermath

The next few days had gone by in a blur. I'd woken up about 2 hours after I'd entered the code, locking the entire compound down. For the first day or so I'd wandered around the compound, going from room to room absentmindedly just trying to rationalize everything I'd seen and heard...

Could my parents really be dead? What has killed them?  I'd seen countless zombie movies, but equating it to reality seemed too far fetched. Those Things didn't look like standard issue zombies, no rotting or death, just lots of blood and super fast! My mind raced as my body wandered on auto pilot. Before I could realize what had happened I was standing in my parents room. Everything seemed so familiar, yet so foreign. They were gone and I was all alone in this massive compound.. the tears started without warning as I collapsed onto my parents bed, uncontrollably weeping. My tears silently falling on their duvet, their scent wafting into my nose, causing me to cry even harder than I was before.

I ended up falling asleep in their bed for the remainder of my birthday, waking up only to the sound of my fathers alarm clock going off at 6:00 in the morning. I silenced his alarm and sat in their bed for what seemed like forever, the previous days events replaying in my mind over and over again. How could this be my new reality? It seemed to crazy to even believe. After a while I got up, shook the sleep out me and decided I was gonna make the most of everything I could for as long as I could. My parents training FINALLY kicking in as I set to work taking stock of everything I had access too.

My food and water supply was limitless as long as I kept up on the farming, which wasn't an issue. I was perfectly safe in the compound as far as I could see, combing through every entrance seeing if there was any sign that those Things had tried to break in. Once id taken stock of everything and determined I was safe and that all my need would be met, I decided to hit the gym to work off my sadness and pain. The workout lasted hours, I didn't stop until every muscle in my body couldn't function normally. Which I'm hindsight probably wasn't the best option but hey I was grieving ok?

The next few days were spent organizing and doing research. I set up my room as an impromptu command center, linking every camera of the outside to my PC, which took almost a full day! The next day was all about research. I looked on every social media platform and news outlet to try and figure out what had happened, and it looked all but hopeless. Every city in the world had been overrun by zombie in just a few short days. Every country's military was doing their best but could keep up with just how quickly the infection spread. Nobody was prepared for a zombie outbreak that overrun the entire world in a matter of days! Luckily people had just enough time to analyze the zombies.

Turns out the zombie were immortal! But only in the sense of aging, they could be killed by smashing their brain completely. No stabbing or one hit bashing. The brain had to be completely destroyed or their cellular regeneration would kick in and they'd be up ready to go in a matter of days. They'd lost everything that had made them human. They couldn't speak as far as anyone could tell, only grunt and scream and howl. The worst bit was they could organize! Countless hunting parties could be found on social media, and let me tell you it was a terrifying sight to behold. Organized groups of inhumanly strong predators pouncing on individuals without mercy or hesitation, it almost reminds me of piranhas, they'd devour their victim within minutes, leaving nothing but blood, shredded bits of meat and bone.

The whole thing freaked me out so badly I had to avoid the internet for a very long time afterwards. Instead I filled my days with chores! Farming, workouts, meal prep and planning. Consuming movies and video games became the regular for me. Nothing could get in, and I definitely wasn't leaving so all I had to do was just keep from going crazy and I'd be perfectly ok! Weeks had past at this point and I'd settled into a wonderful routine! I'd start my days with breakfast, then proceed to working out, switching between cardio and weight lifting. Once those were done I'd check on the greenhouses and make sure everything was watering properly and everything was growing as it should, then I'd play games for a while, eat dinner then finish out the day by watching a movie. Everything seemed so normal I almost forgot the outside world existed!

That is until for the first time in weeks I heard the intercom bell ring...
