The sound echoed through the compound. A sound I never thought I'd hear again. The sickly sweet chime that used to bring me happiness sent chills through my entire body. I'd seen the posts online, or lack thereof. Nobody posted things anymore other than bots. If there was anyone alive they were hiding for everything they were worth. I stared at my bedroom intercom screen horrified by what might be on the other side of that screen. I slowly got up, my legs shaking with fear and curiosity. As I approached the screen thousands of things went through my mind. "Was there survivors? Was it bandits? Or could those Things have gotten smarter?" All those thoughts and more raced through me as I approached the screen.
As soon as I pressed the answer button the screen brightened and showed me something I never thought I'd see! It was a woman, or at least at first glance it looked like a woman. Young, brown hair with blonde streaks, a soft oval face and pouty lips. The eyes... the eyes were all wrong. They were glazed over. I could tell they used to be a crystal light blue before, but now they seemed lifeless.. only they weren't. They were inhuman. A hungry behind the eyes so strong I became paralyzed at the sight of them, AND THEY WERE FOCUSED ON ME!!!! Without hesitation she began growling and howling, banging against the camera screen trying to get at me with a force I would've never expected from anything living. This shocked me out of paralysis and I immediate turned off the video intercom, my breath shallow and shaky. I went to go collapse on my bed again, horrified by what I had seen. So those were the monsters, up close and personal. No wonder everything went to shit so fast. If I hadn't looked in detail I could've swore she was a regular.. DING! The intercom had gone off a second time. This time I simply sat up and stared at the intercom. Was it the same zombie woman? Did she somehow figure out that pressing the button meant she could see me again? Would she try and get at me again? I walked up to the intercom again, with a little more confidence, knowing she wouldn't be able to get me through a screen. I pressed answer and there was her face again, and just like last time as soon as the call connected and she saw my face she went right into attack mode, growling and howling, bashing at the screen trying to get at me.
This time I stood my ground and just stared at her, studying her feature. She must've been very beautiful when she was alive! Along with the hair, eyes and face she had a curvaceous figure, more athletic than anything else. She was wearing a pink and gray track suit and leggings. The only flaw I could see was a bite mark, deep, raw and bloody on her right shoulder. Huh that must've been where she got turned. She continued to freak out and try to get me until finally I got bored and hung up the intercom. It seemed crazy that she had managed to push the button twice to get a look at me... DING! Holy fuck three times? I could tell a pattern was emerging, but I had to go and see if maybe this one was just an accident. Nope! As soon as I pressed the answer button it happened again. Her howling and growling and bashing was starting to get annoying and tedious. I watched for a little bit before I finally got sick of it and yelled "WOULD YOU KNOCK IT OFF ALREADY! YOU'RE NOT GONNA GET ME!" Clearly she was not expecting this cause she stopped as soon as I said it and got a curious look on her face.
My face must've looked about the same, probably due to my surprise that she'd actually stopped. As far as I knew the zombies had lost all sense of humanity, including the ability to speak and understand speech. But this one apparently understood stop. She know looked at the screen and moved her head from side to side, kind of like a dog does when it's thinking. "Listen I know you probably can't understand me but I'm tired, can you wait until morning to start pressing the button again?" I said, a yawn escaping me as I said it. Her facial expression didn't change but something about her eyes did. The same predator nature still radiated from them, but now a spark of something else I couldn't identify flicked within them. I pressed end call on the intercom and flipped right into my bed. The absurdity of it all playing through my brain as I drifted off to sleep...
Had she understood me?
