Hermione woke up to the smell of pancakes in the kitchen. She'd slept right through until the morning. She walked into the kitchen to find George making pancakes.
"Hey Granger, you're meant to be in bed!" He said. "Go back and we can have a chat, alright?" Said George. Hermione nodded.
A few minutes after she got back into bed, george brought her pancakes.
"How's it all going with Fred?" He asked.
"Awful, he's sweet and funny and caring." She said.
"Is that a bad thing?" He asked.
"It really hurts when he's like that. He was saying some really lovely things yesterday and my chest just..burnt. I think the more I love him, the more things hurt and the weaker I get."
"Oh Hermione." He said, hugging her.
"I still don't regret what I did." She said, crying into George's shoulder. "I just can't win."
"It'll be over soon, Hermione. I think Fred's really starting to like you more already. You know he's the one who offered to look after you, I didn't tell him to."
"That doesn't mean anything though. He feels like he owes me for saving him."
"I wouldn't be so sure, the way he smiled afterwards tells me he was more than just okay with it." George said, still hugging her. "He keeps getting these sort of bursts of happiness.
"That's the spell. It covers emotional pain too."
"Ooh you two wanna be alone?" Asked Fred, standing in the doorway.
Her and George jumped apart. Fred saw Hermione's teary eyes.
"Hey are you okay? What's wrong?" He asked, concerned.
"Hermione's just not feeling great at the moment." Said George.
"How about you sit with her for a bit, Fred. I've got to go take a shower." said George, making up an excuse to leave.
"Yeah, sure." Fred smiled. He turned to Hermione. "You should probably get some food in you, Hermione. You didn't eat anything yesterday." Fred passed her the pancakes George had put on her bedside table.
He tried to wipe her tears away, but they just kept spilling out of her eyes.
"Hermione, is there something you aren't telling me?" He asked as she ate.
"No I'm just...a bit traumatised from everything that's happened and in quite a bit of pain, still." She said.
"Okay well I'll be here for the whole day if you want to spend some time together, or just talk. I said I'd look after you and that's what I'm going to do." He said.
She nodded.
"So stop bloody crying." He said with a smile.
Hermione laughed. He sat with her while she ate and he chatted with her about nothing in particular and told her some of his best jokes.
"Did you...sustain my injuries or something?" Asked Fred.
"What?"
"Because when I woke up, I was fine and you were knocked out. Did you take away my injuries and channel them onto yourself?" He asked. He was funny but he wasn't stupid.
"No, I...I don't really want to talk about the spell. It was quite a complex spell, it went a little bit wrong and it was ever so slightly illegal. If it wasn't, people would use it all the time." She said. "But that's all I'm saying on the matter. I'm just tired and my body still hurts, but I'll be better and out of your hair in no time." She said, forcing a smile.
