Konig walked into his captain's office, anticipation and anxiety bubbling within him. However, his heartbeat quickened as he noticed General Shepherd standing there. He immediately saluted the general before taking a seat across from his captain, who remained seated on the other side of the desk. The atmosphere was charged with tension as Shepherd got straight to the point.
"Your captain had the pleasure of telling me that you've become quite close with a member of 141. Y/n."
His heart raced, wondering where this conversation was heading.
"Yes. I have," he replied cautiously.
Shepherd didn't waste any time and threw a file onto the desk in front of Konig. The label on it read "highly classified."
"Captain here tells me that you've recently been promoted to lieutenant. I want you to prove to me that you deserve that rank."
Konig reached out, his fingers trembling slightly, and picked up the file. As he slowly opened it, he was met with a picture of you, and his heart dropped like a stone. His blood ran cold as Shepherd continued speaking.
"I need you to get every bit of information off of her about her past and her family...I believe she's working with the Russians."
Konig couldn't believe what he was hearing. It was impossible. You could never be working with the Russians. Shepherd had no idea what he was talking about.
"An intelligence report recently informed us that her parents were ultranationalist terrorists, and they worked with Zakhaev for years before they were killed. After their deaths, Y/n and her brother were moved around from foster home to foster home, but I don't buy that. I believe they were strategically placed all over Europe by Zakhaev. Every town they were placed in, there was a terrorist attack not too far away."
"Thankfully, her brother was killed in action a year ago, so we don't have to worry about him anymore."
Konig was in disbelief. He couldn't believe what he was hearing. He knew you weren't working with them. He knew, deep in his heart, that you weren't. However, he had no authority to tell Shepherd that.
Doubt began creeping into his mind, and he tried desperately to shake those feelings away. He remembered the time when you had left him years ago. He vividly recalled that, after you left, several churches near the town he lived in had been set on fire.
Doubt, mixed with paranoia, started to cloud his judgment, and he quickly tried to push those thoughts out of his mind. You would never have done that. You had saved him. Why would you save him if you were working with the Russians? The more he thought about it, the crazier Shepherd's theory sounded.
"General, they were kids. Could they really have done things like that?"
Shepard replied coldly, "Lieutenant, I've seen kids younger than they were do things you couldn't even imagine."
Konig took a deep breath, still gazing at your picture in the folder.
"I can't exactly act the way I would like right now. If I could, I'd have her in this office so I could interrogate her." Konig didnt hesitate to say what was on his mind.
"You would torture her until she talked."
"No. Do you really think I could hurt one of Captain Price's soldiers without him blowing up half the base?"
Konig knew that his words held a double meaning. He was well aware of Shepherd's ruthless reputation and didn't doubt his ability to torture someone mercilessly.
"I don't want any issues between Kortac and the 141 right now. Our Russian problem needs to die down a bit before I can fully act. The 141 is a valuable asset to us right now, and as much as I hate to say it, we need their help. But as of right now, the 141 are our allies."
Konig's mind raced as he attempted to comprehend the gravity of what he was being asked to do. Taking on this mission meant betraying you directly. It went against his loyalty to you. However, he understood that if he refused, Shepherd would simply assign the mission to someone else who wouldn't hesitate to hurt you.
"I'll do it. I'll get the information you're looking for," Konig reluctantly agreed.
"It wont be soon but ill let you know when I make my move. Dont disappoint me konig." Shepard patted his shoulder and left the room, leaving Konig with a heavy sense of guilt and responsibility.
Konig's mind raced as he left Shepard's office, the weight of his decision bearing down on him like an anchor. He felt torn between his loyalty to you and his duty to follow orders. Taking this mission meant betraying you, and the thought gnawed at his conscience.
As he walked back to the room where you were most likely asleep, guilt hung heavily on his shoulders. He couldn't shake the feeling of betrayal, even though he rationalized that this was the only way he could protect you. He didn't want you to get hurt, and he knew that if he refused, Shepard would simply assign the mission to someone else, someone who might not hesitate to use force.
Konig's resolve solidified as he repeated to himself that he would get the information Shepard wanted but also prove your innocence. He was determined to show that you weren't involved with the Russians, that you were the same person he had grown to love and trust.
He entered the room where you lay asleep, your peaceful expression contrasting with the turmoil in his heart. As he quietly got ready for bed, he couldn't help but glance at you, his mind filled with conflicting emotions. He wanted nothing more than to protect you, even if it meant temporarily betraying your trust. All he could hope for was that, in the end, you would be safe, and the truth would come to light.
The soft morning light filtered through the window, casting a warm glow across the room as you slowly stirred from your slumber. Your eyes fluttered open to find Konig lying beside you, his arm wrapped protectively around your waist, holding you close. There was a sad look in his eyes as he gazed down at you.
You couldn't help but smile sleepily, the sight of him so close filling your heart with warmth. You asked him what was wrong, your voice soft and affectionate.
"Im sorry" was all he said, you couldn't quite fathom what he was apologizing for in this peaceful moment. You let out a soft laugh, leaning in to kiss him gently.
"What are you sorry for, Konig?" you whispered against his lips, your fingers tracing patterns on his chest.
He hesitated for a moment, his eyes searching yours, he wanted nothing more then tell you what Sheppard asked of him but he knew he couldnt. Instead, he simply kissed you back, his lips meeting yours in a tender and apologetic kiss.
You didn't press further, as you snuggled closer to Konig, finding comfort in his embrace, he couldn't help but feel a weight of regret pressing upon him. His eyes held a profound sadness as he held you, realizing the path he had chosen.
