**A/N: I get it, I get it!! You'll get your Rodrick soon, DW!! Character building is just as important as the nasty nasty 🫷🏽🙄 Also, Y/N wants all the smoke with her mother.**
---
After Y/N was taken inside, her father, having unloaded the car with her belongings, drove off indignantly without another word. In the meantime, her mother showed her to what was once her childhood room.
The room was a good size, with deep gray walls that had been painted over the pale pink ones of her childhood. In the center was a queen-sized canopy bed with white curtains, while a white vanity stood in the corner.
The hardwood floors had been freshly swept and mopped, carrying the fresh scent of Pine-Sol from the previous day's cleaning.
---Downstairs, Y/N's mother sat on a stool at the kitchen island, enjoying a toaster strudel and typing on her MacBook as Y/N descended for breakfast.
She looked considerably more refreshed compared to last night, wearing a crisp white blouse, sleek black dress pants, and unmistakable red-bottom heels – a clear sign of an important appointment.
"Work?" Y/N inquired as she took a seat, nodding towards her laptop.
Her mother continued typing, her expression serious. "Your father and I had a discussion."
"Okay?" Y/N sensed where her mother was heading, but she wouldn't make it easy.
"Okay?" Her mother folded her fingers, giving all her attention to Y/N. "Do you think what you've been doing is appropriate?"
Y/N almost snorted. "Explain?"
"Don't act innocent."
"Well, you of all people should be the last to judge," Y/N countered.
"Excuse me?"
"You do remember why I've been living with Dad for the past, what," she paused, "ten years?"
Her mother looked appalled.
"Right," Y/N concluded.
"Do not speak to me with such condescension." She closed her computer before speaking again. "I've changed."
"Atonement doesn't equal forgiveness," Y/N said flatly. "You think that just because you've collected a few chips at rehab, landed a nice office job, and bought back our old house, you're suddenly a parent?"
This statement floored Y/N's mother. She rose to her feet and faced her daughter. "So you think I'm not a parent?"
Y/N let out a harsh cackle, full of malice. "Do I think you're a parent?" She repeated before answering, "No. Aside from birthday cards and throwaway money, you're not a parent."
"Enough!" her mother's voice echoed throughout the house. "I'm done with this conversation." She took a deep breath before changing the subject. "You've got a babysitting job today, right across the street—a little boy named Manny."
"A babysitting job?" Y/N furrowed her brow. "When were you planning on telling me about this, and am I getting paid?"
"Just after you finished your breakfast, and yes." Y/N's mother closed the discussion before gathering her laptop and tucking it under her arm. "Be ready by ten-thirty, the Heffleys are waiting."
