Y/N watched Mrs. Heffley drive off, then pocketed the babysitting money. She gently lowered Manny from her hip and turned around, only to find Rodrick standing over her shoulder.
"Shit, Rodrick!" Y/N yelped and jumped back, thumping herself against the door in the process.
Rodrick crouched down to cover Manny's ears momentarily before saying, "Yikes, no cursing around the kid."
Y/N grimaced at him, rubbing her back. "I'm here to babysit Manny, not an overgrown, immature man-child."
"So, you think I'm manly?" He stood up and extended a hand to help her up. She slapped it away before steadying herself.
"Far from it," Y/N replied, looking up at him, her head tilted slightly as she studied him. Rodrick was quite tall.
He wore an oversized hoodie and sage green cargo pants. His hands were adorned with chunky silver rings, and his nails were painted black.
"Ouch," he dramatically clutched the right side of his chest and leaned in, bringing them nose to nose. "Breaking my heart."
Y/N couldn't help but laugh. "Your heart's on the left."
He rolled his eyes and straightened up. "I'm pretty sure I know where it's at, smart-ass."
"Yeah?" she scoffed, then guided his hand to the correct position. "What you were feeling before was a pulse; that right there is your heartbeat."
