The nighttime air swirled and danced about in the sky over Vladikovo, Ukraine.
Stars faintly twinkled in the dark sky above.
Oktaviya Sklairova headed down the cracked sidewalks under the cover of night with her hands buried deep within her jacket pockets as she followed behind her identical twin brother, Jasoslav.
Oktaviya let her scarlet gaze dance across the darkened, cracked windows of buildings that had been long since been abandoned that just sat gathering dust.
No cars raced by on the darkened road.
No street lights and lamp posts illuminated the streets.
No people passed by to commute to their nightshifts at their jobs.
Vladikovo seemed to be a complete and utter mystery to Oktaviya. But, alas, there was one thing she knew for sure: Vladikovo was sleepy and barren.
Oktaviya shivered a little bit as the cold winds from the north hit her due to the impending winter weather.
There was something so eerie... so creepy... so haunting about Vladikovo.
It's a ghost town, Oktaviya thought to herself as she continued to follow her twin brother down the street.
"This place sure is... quiet," Oktaviya's voice rang out, shattering the silence of the night. She wetted her lips. "It's..." She began to remark. "It's nothing at all like home..."
Oktaviya called Kyiv, Ukraine home on account of the fact she had grown up in an orphanage there.
"Yeah... I guess Vladikovo is pretty quiet," Jasoslav told his older twin sister. "Though, I never really thought about that much since it's what I'm used to..."
Oktaviya continued to look around at the barren town before she made her next comment. "...Growing up here must've been weird then."
"Come on," Jasoslav began to beckon his sister. "Mother's home is just through this alleyway."
"You want me to go into a dark alley in a creepy ghost town?" Oktaviya asked. "That sounds like a sure shot way to get us murdered."
"Oh, come on. Don't be such a chicken," the younger twin teased Oktaviya. "You're a demon... I don't think anyone's gonna mess with you. You're good."
Oktaviya sucked in a breath. "Touché."
The twins continued forward, crossing the empty street and heading into the alleyway.
Finally, they made it to the Sklairov residence that was old and beaten down.
Jasoslav casually opened the door.
Oktaviya gawked at this. "You guys leave your door unlocked? Aren't you afraid that someone will break in and murder you? Don't you have a mob around in this parts?"
Jasoslav shrugged. "Everyone in Vladikovo is too afraid of Mother to ever try anything."
The two entered the home, the door closing behind them.
The twins' younger half brother, Mykhail--who was now eleven years old--slipped past.
"Mykey," Jasoslav called out to his younger brother. "This is our sister... Oktaviya."
Mykhail gave Oktaviya a shy glance before slipping away into another room.
"Don't worry," Jasoslav began to say to his twin sister. "He'll warm up to you... Eventually."
Footsteps of their mother's echoed from the doorway into the room.
"Oktaviya?" Dasha's voice dawned as she slowly made her way over to the twins.
"Mother?" Oktaviya responded, being in shock about finally seeing Dasha after all these years.
Dasha moved forward quickly, pulling Oktaviya into a tight embrace. "I missed you," the mother said, cradling her daughter in her arms, lovingly.
Oktaviya gently mumbled, "I missed you too."
