CHAPTER 4

POOR BUTTER CHICKEN

MEHR RIAZ:

"Ms. Riaz, I hope you've completed the patient report for the patient in Room 304!"

"I hope for your sake Ms. Riaz that you've administered the correct dosage to my patient"

"I want to see all the patient histories on my desk by 5 pm."

"That is not the appropriate way to change the surgical dressing of a patient Ms. Riaz. You seem to be not suitable for the job of even a nurse."

"Ms. Riaz, I want to see my coffee on my desk after the surgery."

"I don't think you've learnt anything in medical school! That's not the way to do it, Ms. Riaz!"

Ms. Riaz this...Ms. Riaz that!
I'm fed up of hearing my own name.

It's been a week of my internship in NM Hospital and let me just tell you it's been hell. Dr. Rayyan or should I say Dr. Khadoos has been badgering all of us with loads of work. ESPECIALLY ME!!

(Khadoos - Grumpy/ Unfriendly)

He's indeed a perfectionist as Isha had mentioned because he's constantly at our backs and making us work harder than any other Department interns.

I think he has a grudge against me after the incident in the corridor because he's been pointing out my mistakes more than others.

Even when I don't make any mistakes, he finds reasons to scold me. He's been constantly giving me some or the other tasks hoping that I'll give up and leave.

He probably thinks that I don't deserve this internship but I've made it my mission to prove him wrong. I've been working hard and learning from my mistakes and I'm gonna prove him wrong.

After all I'm one of the top students in my batch! And I've worked hard to be a part of this internship.

Apart from this petty grudge of his against me, I hate to admit it but he's an amazing doctor. Despite being strict with work, he's very patient and kind while dealing with his patients and best of all, he never gives up on them.

I've got the chance to learn a lot from him in just a few days. Now I just need to keep my head down and go through these six months.

Another thing is that we've all only ever seen him working in the hospital. None of us have ever seen him relaxing or even in the Mess Hall or Cafeteria as we call it during lunch.

Thank God for that though! I already see enough of him during work.

Getting back to the present from my thoughts, I look around the now almost fully packed cafeteria and still see a few lingering stares from around the room.

Ever since the corridor incident, I've apparently become very famous. Most people would just smile and laugh when seeing me because they were probably remembering that God forbidden incident and enjoying my embarrassment.

Some people though, most young female doctors and nurses in specific, would give me the stink eye every time they see me.

Ignore them Mehr! Everyone's gonna forget about it in a few days.

I'm sitting in the middle of the cafeteria with the other interns from my department, Isha and two other interns from her department stuffing a big bite of my Butter Chicken and just enjoying the explosion of flavours in my mouth when I hear a voice from behind me.

"Ms. Riaz!"

I start coughing and choking on the Butter Chicken instantly recognising Dr. Rayyan's voice.
