As you held the piece of parchment in your hand, your eyes couldn't help but widen. I did it. It was unbelievable. I actually did it.
"No way." Cedric tried his best to stiffle his surprise but to no avail. "Sorry, I don't mean that in a rude way, I've always believed in you."
"Be as surprised as you want. You and I both." You muttered, still staring at the E on your paper. "I actually can't believe it."
For a solid while, you just simply sat there on the common room couch with Cedric towering behind you, propping his arm against the couch. It all felt so surreal. Like you were in a movie of sorts. It had to be.
"Merlin! I'm so proud of you (Y/n)!" Cedric was first to break out of the surprise, immediately grabbing you and giving you a bear-hug from behind you. "I knew you had it in you!"
"Thanks, Ced." You finally murmured with a smile. "Thanks."
"How did you manage to do that?!" He exclaimed. "Like, okay, I know you're amazing at every other subject, I'm not surprised you got straight Os. But potions? How did you get an E?"
"No idea." You shrugged. "I guess I had a little help from someone."
"I can't wait to know how Professor Snape reacts to this."
"Same, but I'll have to do it later today. Headmaster says I have to go meet with him and Professor McGonagall right when I get my results." You told him, finally scrolling back your NEWT results and setting it aside.
"Does an E work? You're only applying to be an assistant." He questioned.
"I hope so.. but chances are slim." You sighed. Even after everything, you still hadn't achieved your dream of getting O in Potions. Regardless, an E was already amazing for you.
"Well, best of luck, (Y/n). I'm rooting for you."
"I know, Ced. Thank you."
-----
"Headmaster." You acknowledged. "You asked to see me?"
"Yes, (Y/n). I'd like to discuss the job a bit further after you got your results." Dumbledore spoke calmly. He gestured you to sit as you sat opposite of him and McGonagall.
"I got an E in Potions.. is that enough?" You asked, holding onto your chair for dear life, bracing yourself. He's going to decline, I just know it, I just know it, I just..
"I'm afraid not, (Y/n)." Professor McGonagall spoke. Damn it. You nodded in understanding.
"It's fine. I completely understand." You sighed, prepared to leave, thinking Dumbledore will dismiss you.
"However."
You lifted your head to meet his eyes.
"There's a reason I gathered you here with Professor McGonagall here today." He replied. "We'd like to discuss a few.. alternate choices you have given your outstanding grades."
"Go on, sir.."
"Well, you see, dear.."

[Snape pov]
A knock.
I swiftly opened the door to find (Y/n) standing outside my office. As expected.
"How is it?" I asked.
"E." She replied. "I got an E."
"I'm so proud of you." I gave a small smile. "Look at how far you've come."
"I'm sorry I didn't get an O." She murmured. What was this girl thinking? She got an E for Potions! Potions for bloody sake! I was beyond proud and happy for her. How could she even think I'd be disappointed?
"What? No! Don't be!" I quickly replied. "You did your best, and for that I'm proud of you. You get to be a Herbologist now!"
She nodded lightly with a smile. "Yeah.. yeah! I do."
"Where would you like to work? Have you ever thought about it?"
"Oh. Well, er. I've talked- to, er, Professor McGonagall about it- er, before." i raised an eyebrow. Was she having a stroke?
"Right.. and?"
"And.. and yeah." She replied. "Anywho, would you like coffee?"
"(Y/n)-"
"I want some. So, um, I'm just gonna- go." She stood and left to the kitchenette.
"(Y/n), what's wro-" There was aggressive clanking from the kitchenette. What was happening? Why was she avoiding my questions?
Eventually, I decided not to push the matters any further. I sent her on her way after a bit of talking and was prepared to turn in for the night and leave to return to my private quarters.
Right as I opened the door, I was greeted with an awfully cheerful Albus Dumbledore standing right out of my office door.
"Severus! Just the boy I was looking for."
"Albus, you're going to give me a heart attack one day." I simply acknowledged.
"My, aren't you a dramatic one, Severus." I nearly laughed at that.
"What seems to be the problem this time, Albus?"
"You heading to your quarters, are you? Let me walk with you, we can talk on the way."
-----
"What are your thoughts on (Y/n)?"
"Miss (L/n)? Well, she's quite the student." I replied swiftly. "She's a quick learner."
"Yes, well, what about her as a person?" I grimaced.
"I'm not sure what you're suggesting, Albus."
"I'm not suggesting anything, Severus. You're simply looking too deeply into this matter."
"Well, I suppose she's quit nice." I said. "She's funny, kind, talented, a ray of sunshine I tell you. Why..?"
"No reason." Albus replied, but I knew he was lying. You never know with this man.
He continued to talk about socks and how his favorite pair got hexed by Fred and George Weasley. I couldn't help but remember (Y/n) having something to do with that prank during April in their 3rd Year.
As we reached my chambers, I bid my goodbyes to Albus and said my goodnights. Prepared to walk inside, Albus spoke.
"What are your thoughts on getting an apprentice, my boy?"
