A huge palanquin came into the hall.
Jashoda ran up towards the palanquin, and tried to remove the curtains to peek inside.
"Wait Jashoda! Not so soon yet! It's a part of Your birthday celebrations." Her Mother stopped Her and held Her hand and took Her inside.
She kept looking inside the palanquin, wondering what was there inside.
"Will I get a sign from the Divine? Will the purpose of this life be revealed?" She thought as She looked on.
Jashoda would be five years old in a few days. A huge celebration was planned and the preparations were going on in full zeal.
She had asked for only one gift; a whole bunch of peacock feathers similar to the one Her Grandfather wore on His crown.
But peacock feathers were so uncommon and rare in the lands where it hardly rained. Monsoons were short lived and peacocks never got the opportunity to dance to their hearts' contentment.
Still, Her parents and Grandfather would leave no stone unturned and didn't want to disappoint Her.
She crept back into Her bed and folded Her hands. Her eyes turned gloomy and full of despair. She sat, staring out through the window.
"Maybe this birthday too won't be fruitful." She sighed.

"Jashoda! Come here."
Her Grandfather extended His hands and called Her towards Himself.
Everyone was lined up and busy distributing gifts to the citizens. Her relatives had also gathered to give Her precious presents on Her big day.
She ran excitedly towards the King. "I know You wanted to see what's inside the palanquin. Now is the time to open the curtains!"
He clapped His hands three times and the maids pulled the curtains to one side. Jashoda screamed with glee and joy.
"Peacock feathers!"
The palanquin was filled with uncountable, beautiful, serene peacock feathers. She started to touch and feel each one of them, it they were too many in number to be counted.
"Our Granddaughter asked Us for something, and We must try Our best to fulfil Her wish." He hugged Her in a loving embrace.
Everyone looked on at the beautiful bond between a grandfather and His granddaughter.
A sudden sound took everyone's attention away from Them.
Jashoda went towards the balcony to find the source of the sound.
"Don't they sound like….?" Her Mother asked.
Her Father looked stunned and in disbelief. "Like peacocks!"
They all went towards the terrace. A bunch of beautiful peacocks were dancing, even amidst the glowing sunlight.
"But how is it possible? Peacocks here, that too when there's no rain. I knew that peacocks are rare and I had got the feathers imported from a neighbouring kingdom."
Jashoda ran up the stairs in a hurry, clenching Her robes with one hand and the staircase handle with the other.
She jumped in excitement and started dancing with the peacocks.
"It's a sign! It's a sign! Thank you!" She sang in euphoric gratitude.
It was Her best birthday and the most perfect gift.
