Mia turned the steering wheel gently as the boat responded quickly to her movements. In the hot tropical wind, her hair was blowing in her smiling face and covering her sunglasses but she increased her speed.
Both Danila and Kirill sat behind her and looked at her gorgeously tanned body in her white bikini. She insisted on bringing the bathing suits Danila bought her but preferred her own white one to all the others.
Pulling up not too far from a small cave, they all jumped in the water with their snorkeling masks, enjoying the warm water and watching colourful fish right beneath their feet.
Exhausted from the sun, she drove them back to their secluded hotel and as they stayed on the private beach, Mia approached Danila's back and said in a worried voice,
"Danila, you need to use sunscreen, you can't just burn like this!" She lightly poked his red and burnt upper back.
"No. Sunscreen is no good for you. Plus, this is the best way to get a good tan." He responded chuckling as Kirill laughed.
"This is how Russians tan. If we don't burn, then we feel like we didn't actually spend time on the beach." Kirill explained as he watched on, but he always used plenty of sunscreen.
"You guys are insane, his back is literally red like a lobster!" Mia laughed too as she squirted cold aloe on him.
"Oh my god! That's so cold! Why, why would you do that!" He arched his back at the cold sensation as Mia laughed and gently rubbed it in.
"Thankfully, your face is still intact. If you don't use sunscreen on your face, I will make Kirill pin you down while I rub it in your nose and ears." She spoke matter of factly as she assessed the damage on his red back.
"Pfft. He can try." Danila scoffed and Kirill raised his eyebrows as Mia watched on.
"You think you're stronger than me?!" Kirill asked bewildered.
Danila smiled slyly and responded,
"You're a little bit bigger but, I'm more agile. And younger. And smarter. And more handsome. And I have actual training whereas you just have meathead skills."
"Ooohhh...shots fired." Mia looked at Kirill with a small smile and edged them on.
"Let's go. Right now. Get up." Kirill was already on his feet and lightly kicking sand toward Danila.
Mia sat back on her heels as she watched Danila rise silently. They exchanged a few words about rules and while Danila was pure stealth, Kirill was impatient and swiped his leg which Danila easily avoided.
Mia watched on with bated breath and anticipation as she smiled widely at the scene in front of her.
Their wrestling match looked both hilarious and silly as they didn't take each other seriously and mostly were just putting on a show for her. Sand flying in all directions, they laughed and yelled at each other as Mia enjoyed it.
Once they were both out of breath, they agreed to a truce, but as soon as Danila relaxed, Kirill grabbed his neck and easily wrestled him to the ground and pinned him on his back.
"You're more agile, huh?" Kirill looked down at a stunned Danila who hadn't even opened his eyes yet.
Mia walked up to them and bent down close to Danila's face and said,
"Sunscreen. In your nose. And ears. Be prepared." She got up and caught Kirill's hungry lips in hers.
Their vacation was relaxing and slow. They slept in, had sex, swam, explored the island, and didn't speak about anything serious.
The investigation in Russia was in full swing and both Danila and Kirill got updates from their sources about what was going on. The police had no trail yet except for the mysterious girl on the video which nobody recognized or could locate.
But among police units, it sparked a heated conversation about human trafficking as Alexei was identified and the Turkish nationals raised more questions than provided answers. More police units at all levels of the government got involved and more and more women were freed from the awful dark network.
They spent their last day on the beach and as Mia came over to sit down beside Kirill with a cold drink, she caught the end of their conversation,
"So you sent Masha the money? Enough?" Kirill asked while looking straight.
Danila said a quick yes as he noticed Mia approach.
At this moment, her phone rang and she picked it up to chat with her dad as Danila left them two alone.
"Hi daddy!" Mia sang sweetly and Kirill turned to her with a smile. "I know, I know, I'm so sorry dad, it's just that Russia was...I don't know, kind of crazy and I didn't have much time to talk, especially with the time difference. I will come see you once I'm back. I promise!"
Mia's father had no idea that Kirill was alive or the real reason she went to Russia. Mia told him that she had to travel there to wrap up Kirill's loose ends.
"Sweetheart I...I want to see you and chat. I want to hear about your trip. Well, trips actually! When can you come over?" Her dad inquired.
"How about Tuesday? I'll come by for dinner?" Mia proposed. They finished up their conversation and Mia hung up the phone.
"Did you ever tell your dad who I was?" Kirill asked her as he pulled his gaze away from his book to look at her.
"No. He would have had a heart attack. He is the most law abiding, strait laced man you will ever meet." She responded honestly.
"So he still thinks a doctor's salary could have paid for that wedding?" He joked as Mia laughed and turned to him fully to gaze into his eyes and his tanned and tattooed body. God, she loved him so much.
"I don't know actually. We didn't have much time to discuss it. But the wedding was a little over the top." She realized this was the first time they spoke about it. "I mean you had fireworks at the end of the night. And the cutlery was real gold...and how much money did you spend on getting Sting to sing?" She chuckled as she thought back to their wedding night, both great and awful memories stirring inside her.
"A lot probably." Kirill responded with humour. "I don't really like him, to be honest. Like all British people, he thinks he's the best. Such imperialists." Kirill ended on a political note and Mia scoffed.
"Oh my God, imperialists?! You guys are the last people who should be talking about that!" She sat up and lightly swatted his arm.
"Come on. You know Russia is not an empire now. Our days of glory are behind us, sadly. Now we're just in constant conflict with you guys. Talking about which! I can't believe I have an American for a wife! My ancestors are turning in their graves right now!" Kirill faked concern and disappointment as he took off his sunglasses and looked at her mischievously.
Mia didn't falter.
"America is a great country. We have lots to be proud of. But don't forget, I am exactly 50% Russian. So our babies will be as pure blood as they can possibly be to satisfy your imperialist goals!" She mockingly shouted at him as she got up on her feet and spilled her iced drink all over his body and began to laugh.
Shock and pain radiated through him as he saw her grin get wider and she backed away jumping onto the sand from the cabana.
"You're going to pay for that." He spoke darkly as she laughed and ran toward the ocean and away from him in earnest and he chased after her.
Completely in love and lost in each other, they both looked forward to their future, no matter where it was, as long as it was together.
Paradise found.
