MITCH
I’m mentally exhausted from the day and my legs are hurting after the four hours I spent on a horse today, but when Brielle walks out of the bathroom wearing one of my old t-shirts and crawls up onto the bed next to me, I feel a crazy sense of calm come over me and I feel at home. I wrap her in my arms and take a deep breath of her scent. “What’s on your mind, beautiful?”
“I don’t know, lots of things and nothing at all. Does that make sense?”
I brush her hair to the side so I can kiss the back of her neck. “Yeah, I can feel you. Today was a really long day.”
“It was. I’m worried about Britt. Do you think there is anything I can do to help her?”
“We’re definitely in two very different positions with Max being gone. I wish I had some grand advice because I hate seeing her in so much pain.”
“Me too. She is way too amazing and the darkness that kind of looms over her right now just breaks my heart.”
I rub Brielle’s arm and kiss her again. “She’ll get there, I know she will. They were each other’s soulmates. “
“Very true.”
I reach over Brielle to turn off the bedside lamp and then pull the large comforter over us. She takes a few minutes to snuggle into me and soon I can tell that she’s fallen asleep as her breathing evens out and she lets out these little snores here and there. I try to get to sleep, but my brain is going a million miles a minute.
I thought for a second I heard a knock, but checking my phone it was almost two in the morning.. I turned my phone off and heard the knock again, this time it was for sure a knock. I slowly climb out of bed, making sure that Brielle is tucked in nicely. When I open the front door, Granger is leaning up against his truck.
“About time.”
“Sorry, I wasn’t expecting a random visitor at two in the morning.”
He jutted his chin toward to bunkhouse, “Pretty sure you have a visitor there already.”
“Yeah, but she wasn’t random. What’s up?”
“Go get dressed, we’ve got some work to do.”
“What work?”
“You’ll see, just get dressed and try to stay quiet because we don’t need anybody waking up.”
I give him a sideways look, but he lifts his eyebrows and that’s enough for me to go inside and throw on some jeans and a t-shirt. I leave Brielle a quick note saying that Granger needed something, just in case she wakes up and then I head back outside.
Granger was sitting behind the wheel when I got back outside. I climbed into the cabin and glanced over at him, “Something wrong with one of the cattle or something?”
“Nah, more like a problem with a pig,” he growled.
“We don’t have any pigs on the farm.”
“I know.”
He’s not telling me much more, so I just sit back and enjoy the ride. It takes about 45 minutes, but we pull up to a small house that looks a little run down. He hops out of the truck and grabs the bag from the backseat. I follow along because I don’t know what else to do.
“Granger, what the fuck are we doing here?”
He stops on a dime and turns back to me, “How much do you love Brielle?”
