Cities offered seemingly endless opportunities to those chasing riches. But the shadows under those towering buildings were crawling with danger.
And it was the perfect place for Keigo.
He was a hero after all. He wouldn't be much of one if he hid from the villains, now would he? Though they were pretty hard to come by lately. Hawks was too young to really remember a time before All Might, but those who were around back then pretty much had the same consensus. Villains were a lot braver to say the least.
The very mention of All Might's name was enough to drive the smart ones into the shadows, leaving only the dumb ones out in the open. Sometimes Hawks almost wished All Might wasn't around. Just one little vacation to bring out a real challenge for once. Some might say he should be careful what he wished for, but modern hero work wasn't always the exciting life it was cracked up to be.
After stopping for a coffee break earlier, the number three saw that his wish was answered in a way. All Might hadn't taken a sick day or anything, but according to the news broadcast some excitement had certainly brewed over in Musutafu. It was almost a bummer that he was so far away and missed out.
But it had caught his attention. As he flew overtop the buildings, the winged hero slipped deep into thought about the unusually bold move of those villains. An attack like that hadn't been seen in Japan in decades. Again, not since All Might had been around. So what's changed? He didn't have a genie, so it wasn't his wishful thinking. Something big was lurking deep in those shadows that the villains had retreated to. He could almost sense it through his feathers. And it may just be more than what he bargained for.
The vibration of his phone was a welcome distraction.
"Hey Yokumiru, what's up?"
He was answered with a long sigh.
"... Hi Hawks."
The hero laughed to himself. "I didn't think it would be possible for you to sound more tired than you normally do."
The laugh wasn't shared. Nothing came through the speakers of his phone at all. And that put Hawks off just a little bit. He had known Yokumiru for a long time, and there was something about this call that didn't feel right. Listening to just those two words he was able to easily pick up a sympathetic tone, that and Yokumiru's inability to conjure further words didn't paint a pretty picture. He wasn't someone who usually sugarcoated news, so if something bad had happened... It was something really bad.
"Could you set down for a moment? We have a lot to talk about..."
The rushing wind ceased on Yokumiru's end. He knew how Hawks liked to fly and talk on his phone at the same time. And he thought it would be best that he wasn't mid air when he told what he had to say.
"There's been... an incident."
Hawks let out a sigh of relief.
"Oh, yeah, I know all about that."
"You do?" Either he was taking this very well, or they weren't on the same page. Yokumiru knew which one it was.
"The UA thing?" Hawks asked, seeking confirmation.
"Well, yes, but-"
Hawks chuckled again. "Man, you had me a little worried there for a second. I mean what happened was pretty bad and all, but it's back under control. All Might saved the day as usual, and people are-"
"Hawks."
Cut off, Hawks stopped his ramble.
Like a kid who was getting scolded, the slightly sterner voice of his former caretaker made him close his mouth. Yokumiru may have been more easy going than the others in the commission, but when it was time for him to listen Hawks would do nothing but.
What he heard next was... not like any other briefing. Could it even be called that? It was like being filled in on a drama after missing 11 seasons. Except it was real life, not some character but someone he knew. Or at least thought he did, at one time. Eleven years can do a lot to a person.
But it just didn't seem like it could be real.
"... I know this is different from what we normally ask you to do, but... Could you come over here?"
"Huh? Oh, yeah I'm on my way."
The hero stuffed his phone into his pocket. He ran a hand through his hair and gazed across the city as he deeply took in the brisk air. Even though it looked calm as ever out there, his thoughts were anything but. The dozens, hundreds of thoughts in his mind made it impossible to think at all. Having a clear head was pretty important in the situations he was constantly put in, so he always kept one. Except for right then, because he simply couldn't push it out of his mind if he wanted to. Maybe it was his weak spot.
Forgotten and neglected. That's how Y/N felt. He was still sitting in that room, alone since Higachi left him there. It had been a while too. They could at least offer a glass of water or something. Or maybe Higachi wanted to keep him in there until he died of thirst.
If they would just listen they'd understand this was all for nothing. They wouldn't have to keep him locked up like a criminal. It was all a misunderstanding. He was just at the wrong place at the wrong time. He accidentally landed in the middle of a villain attack.
Putting it that way it didn't sound all that believable.
But it was the truth. Y/N's gut told him that if it was anyone else the commission would let it slide. They'd probably find any excuse to believe a good intentioned story, especially if it helped to prop up one of their golden heroes. But not Y/N, he could never catch a break with them. They were always on his back, criticizing every little thing he did. Comparing him and trying to shape him into their twisted idea of a model citizen. They had no right to act like they knew everything. He hated everything about that institution.
They always left him alone.
The knob turned from the other side. Someone was coming into that interrogation room. Someone he hadn't seen in a while.
"Are you here to release me, Yokumiru?" Y/N spat with mockery.
"You're not a prisoner, Y/N." The suited man corrected with little energy.
"Well it feels like I'm in jail."
Even with the slight consultation that his tiredness wasn't Y/N's fault, it wasn't enough to ease the teen's ruffled feathers. But Yokumiru was unbothered by Y/N's shortened patience and remarks. For one he never let such things bother him. They were just words. That and those emotions were easily understandable, knowing their source. It hadn't been an easy day for anyone. Lashing back would do no good. Especially if he wanted the next few minutes to go smoothly.
The best way to proceed, in Yokumiru's mind anyway, was bluntly. An explanation could wait
"Y/N, there's someone here to see you."
Y/N rolled his eyes. He just wanted to go home and forget about everything. Not talk to some clown.
As he did he saw Yokumiru step aside out of the corner of his eye. Allowing this person to come in. One slow, almost cautious step after the other, they entered. The boy's eyes had landed on the floor once again, but he could see two black boots standing there next to Yokumiru's. And in his peripherals, he noticed their beige pant legs. But what truly caught his attention, was two red tips dangling behind them. That's what forced him to look back up.
Curiosity and disbelief pulled his eyes up from the floor, trailing up the person's body inch by inch. The more of them he could see, the less real they seemed. It was like a ghost, or some made up character he was never meant to actually see.
But there he was.
"Hey little bro."
