Meeting Him

Natalie introduces me to more of her friends. A boy named Bobby. A girl named Jess, another girl named Sarah. Too many to recall. Oh well. I say goodbye to all of them politely when the bell rings and it's time to go to class. I find my way just fine without Natalie. It's actually relatively easy once I realize the pattern of hallways and numbers. My thoughts are discarded when I notice Derek Hale sitting at the back of the classroom, chatting it up with multiple other boys.

"Hale." The teacher calls him out. "Cmon. You know the rules. At the front." He groans but gets up anyways. As he passes by me, our shoulders brush and I tense as I feel a spark of electricity. He must feel it too because he turns and looks over his shoulder at me with confused eyes before sitting. "Miss Stilinski. You might actually be a good influence on Derek. Have a seat behind him, if you will."

Right. Today must be my lucky day. I take a seat behind him, ignoring his carefully thrown-over-his shoulder gaze. He turns in his seat. "You must be the new girl. I see they're accepting 10 year-olds now." He flashes a grin. I purse my lips. "Yep. And you must be the class clown." Snickers escape nearby classmates. He doesn't back down, simply raising his eyebrows. "You're not easily embarrassed." He decides. "That's a good thing." Then he turns and doesn't say another word.

I don't say it out loud, but his presence is...electrifying. It's awakening in a way I've never known before. It's scary. And I think he knows it too.

Derek and I talk once more again, after class. I'm tossing my bag in the backseat of my car when he appears behind me, leaning against my car, startling me so badly I drop it. The contents spill out onto the ground. I quickly duck down to grab my escaping pencils and notebooks, but he's already there, grabbing them up. He hands them to me. Where the hell did you come from? "I wanted to apologize for earlier, I was rude and condescending."

"Oh. Well, thank you. Or whatever." Right. I balance on my heels, avoiding his eyes. He stiffens up suddenly, and it's at that moment that a furious face finds its way into my sight. Silas. Whoa. He's even more intimidating up close.

"Derek!" He barks. "Let's go. Now." His tone is barely contained, I can tell. He's pissed. Derek roles his eyes but moves anyway. "Nice to meet you, New Girl." He walks past Silas and says something under his breath like "I was just curious." At least, that's what it sounded like. I don't understand their dynamic. Why did Silas tell Derek what to do? I mean I get they hang out in the same group, but why the hell did he say that?

And why did Derek listen? Curiouser and curiouser.
