The next day at lunch, the unthinkable happens. I'm talking with Bobby and Natalie when a sharp tap on my shoulder startles me. The entire table goes completely silent upon seeing the unknown visitor. I turn in my seat. Oh no. Not this guy again. Derek Hale stands behind me, holding a basketball. "New Girl. I never caught your name." Dryly I reply. "It's Regina." He nods. "Pretty. Well, see you later, Regina."
When he walks away the table immediately launches into conversation again and Natalie blinks at me with wide eyes. "Okay, spill. What's your secret? How the hell did you get the Derek Hale to speak to you? I'm older and higher than him on the pyramid and I've still never managed to get him to say a word to me. And it's not for lack of trying." I shrug. "He came up to me." She exhales. "That's it?! That's all you've got for me?" She shrieks.
I nod. "That's it." Then I resume picking at my nasty school lunch. Today's special? Moldy salad.

"So, you like to read?" A voice says. I look up from my Harry Potter book. "Yes." I drawl. "Cool. I like to play basketball." I shake my head. "Okay, what is this? I mean, you're asking me all these questions."
"I'm just curious." He huffs. "About what?"
"About you!" He sighs in exasperation. "Just hear me out. Let me take you out." Excuse me? No way in hell. "Ah...uhm...I have something to do." He frowns. "Come on. Please? It'll be fun." I chew my lip. I really don't think this is a good idea. Going out alone with a kid in-in a cult! His eyes flick toward the clock on the clock. "Alright, listen. When the bell rings, you run like hell. No questions asked."
He stands up, and slings his backpack on. "Wait what? Derek-" the bell rings. He shoots off. "Fuck!" I run off after him. He rounds a corner and I very nearly lose him. I hear him laugh somewhere in the distance, and that propels my legs to go faster. I have no idea why we're doing this, or what purpose it serves, but I love it. It's exhilarating. It's new. It's different. A teacher shouts at me and a hand reaches out in the middle of the hallway and pulls me down.
I jump into an empty classroom and duck down behind the door, still holding Derek's hand. Footsteps echo in the hallway as the teacher barrels right past the door, huffing. This is insane. I'm hiding from a teacher. With Derek Hale. He exhales a breathy laugh. His eyes are lit up with excitement. I shake my head. "Come on." He whispers, lifting his hand off mine.
He stands up and opens the door slowly, looking out. "The coast is clear." He steps out cautiously anyways. Then he takes off again. Ugh! I groan and run after him again. He's an athlete, and I'm...average. I don't have a chance of catching up, but I try to anyway. We burst through the front doors of the school ignoring the funny looks from other students.
We make it to my car. He opens the backseat door and jumps into it. I frown. "What do you think you're doing?" He groans. "Just get in and floor it!" He slams the door shut. I can't shake this kid! I get in and slam the driver door shut. Then I start the car and peel out of the parking lot. Derek pops out of the backseat and props himself up, elbow on my center console.
His face is startlingly close to mine and unsettlingly sends waves of warmth. "Turn left!" He shouts. I swerve hard and he rolls in the backseat, bumping his head on the window. He doesn't even make a face. I come to halting stop on the side of the road. He pops up again. "Why'd you stop? Keep going!" I shake my head determinedly. "Not until you tell me what's going on."
He groans. "Alright, look. Silas and the others...they're basically my babysitters. And let's just say they don't like me going off by myself. Now can we go?!" I glare for a moment then turn around and start the car again. It's not much of an explanation, but I can understand the insufferably-ness of not being able to shake someone. To want to be free.
