When I arrive home, I steel myself in my car for a moment before walking in. On the couch, Noah sits, waiting. "Where have you been?" He demands. "It's eleven! And a school night!" His voice raises an octave. "Sorry." I mumble. He sighs. "I'm not mad." Don't say it. Don't say it. "Just disappointed." I flinch. "You could've been killed." Huh? My head snaps up.
"With all these animal attacks lately, whatever has been killing these animals could've gotten to you to! We need to establish some rules." He continues on into the background. I tune him out. I've learned it's better to stay silent and just wait it out because attempting to argue is pointless. And I have nothing to say. And what am I supposed to say?
Eventually he stops and gives up when he finally notices I'm not listening. "Just go to bed, kid." He says, exasperated. I don't argue and head straight to my room. As soon as I close the door behind me and turn I scream. His hand immediately slaps over my mouth. He holds a finger to his lips. I quiet down. He removes it slowly. Then he runs a band through his dark hair and paces around my room.
"What happened tonight shouldn't have happened." I sit on my bed, on the edge. "And what exactly happened? And how'd you get in my room?" I ask. Silas stops. "The window. And nothing. Nothing happened. Just...forget what you saw, okay? Derek's in enough trouble as it is." I perk up. "Derek? Why's Derek in trouble? They attacked us." He shakes his head and lets out a breathy laugh.
"You don't get it. He's not supposed to ditch us. It's dangerous." My eyes narrow. "And why does he need a babysitter? He's sixteen. Same as me." He shakes his head again. "You just don't get it." He repeats. "You didn't see anything." He says with a note of finality. He promptly turns and sticks a leg out of my window. "Wait!" I call. He jumps out. I run to the window. "What are you people?"
He turns with a grave face. "We're the monsters that go bump in the night." Then he disappears into the night, melting away with the shadows of the woods.
