We had been in this house for around an hour now, we're only 30 minutes away from the highway if we walked but Kai kept wincing in pain at every movement and I'm far too exhausted to carry him.

I had thought about leaving him here in a room and boarding the door just so I could run to the highway and let everyone know I'm alright but leaving a kid alone after what happened with Sophia doesn't sit right with me.

"Are you hungry?" I asked him, he looked up at me from a comic he was reading "I'm really hungry" he replied, of course he is. He's so thin and if he's been all alone during this then I doubt he's ate anything proper.

I nodded, walking over to grab food out of one of the bags. I found a tin of canned peaches, I could open that with a knife.

I held it upto him but he scrunched his nose up "I don't like peaches" I sighed, goddamn kids. I pulled out a bag of crisps and a chocolate bar which he instantly snatched from my hand and began chomping down on "Thank you" he mumbled stuffing his face.

Of course he takes the chocolate bar, I mentally laughed to myself. "Do you think you could walk for half an hour?" I asked, sitting across from him on the other couch.

"I-I don't know, I could try" he replied but by the look in his eyes it showed that he was drained and really needed to rest.

"Forget it, we'll stay here tonight. Leave in the morning" I told him, he nodded agreeing. I noticed that I hadn't even gave him something to drink, poor boy must be dehydrated too.

I got up and grabbed a water bottle tossing it over to him, he smiled appreciatevly and began downing it. "I'm a little scared to go back out" he mumbled, screwing the cap to the bottle shut.

"What if those things are still out there" he continued. I frowned, I feel so bad for these kids, getting their childhood stripped away from them like this.

"Look, aslong as you stick by me you'll be okay, I won't let anything happen to you" I assured, he nodded seeming to believe me as he averted his attention back down to the comic.

I wonder how Daryl is or if any of them managed to find Sophia. I can just imagine them all getting back to the highway and seeing that I'm not there. Daryl would freak out, so would my mom and dad and Carl.

I looked around the room at the windows, probably best to board these up before it gets dark. We'll need some sort of light later on so we can see and I don't want walkers noticing it from the windows, especially since that horde will still be around.

I got up and walked over to a wooden table that was in the dining room. I don't know what I could break it up with, would my machete work? Probably not. I pinched the bridge of my nose trying to think.

"What are you doing?" I heard Kai ask as he walked over and stood beside me "I'm going to board these windows up so no walkers see us inside. I need something to break down the wood but I don't know what" I explained.

"Well when I opened the door underneath the stairs earlier, there was an axe behind the monster and my dad used to use axes to chop trees and trees would be harder to chop than the table so it should be-" He began rambling on.

"Thanks Kai, that will do the trick" I smiled, interrupting him, He smiled back and followed me to the door. Atleast the kid can be useful, thank god for that.

I moved the dead walker out the way and grabbed the axe, walking back to the dining room before I began chopping the wood.

I had boarded up most of the windows a couple of hours ago before my body couldn't do any more. Kai had already fell asleep in one of the rooms and here I am laying awake in the next room.

Somehow I'm so exhausted yet can't sleep, how does that even work? I groaned in frustration, tossing and turning on the bed.

My top and shorts were splattered with blood and dirt from those walkers and my whole body just felt disgusting.

I really wish I could shower again, if only the CDC didn't go tits up.

I'm just hoping that we manage to make it to the highway tomorrow and that Sophias been found.
