I yawned tiredly as I waited for the fish to take bait. It was over an hour and I caught nothing. Hopefully Tío had better luck with his bow.
He had to make every arrow himself and the only thing those could kill are small critters and birds, but they get the job done. I was very surprised when a wild rabbit attacked us.
If you could even call that an attack.
The white critter tried to bite and kick, but it just annoyed Tío too much and ended up in a stew.I looked at the pure white snow on the ground and shivered when the cold wind hit me from behind.
It was hard to believe it was already November, but a whole month has passed since the start.Day grew colder and shorter, and shorter days meant more fog. It was almost reaching the tree house now.
Well I was done waiting here for the bite, hopefully Tío was more lucky with his hunting. My bottom was frozen from sitting on the ground with only a thin blanket separating me and the cold ground.
I packed everything and went back, dreaming of the warm blanket and tea.
,,Xio!"
I stopped and looked in the direction of Tíos voice.
,,I'm here!" I shout back and walk in his general direction. It took me a solid minute to find him in all the snow and trees.
He was crouched next to a pile of snow or what looked like snow on the first glance.,,Is that?" I crouched down next to the animal carcass ,,A wolf?"
The white fur blended so well with the snow it was difficult to see it from far away. Not to say that the blood was white as well and it was seeping out of its nose and mouth.
,,Broken ribs." Tío commented as he ran his hand over the carcass, and it had to be fresh since we've been here two days ago.
,,something killed it but didn't eat it",,Whatever it was, I hope it's far away now." I shiver from the cold.
Standing up I notice a black bird strapped by its legs to Tíos bag.,,Seems like you had more luck than me." I show him my empty bag.
He smiles and puffs his chest out ,,Of course. I'm the best when it comes to hunting."
Proud peacock.
We head back towards the tree house and a small thought pass through my head.
,,Why is the raven black? Was it not infected?" I eye the feathers and look up at the trees, trying to find more birds. Thinking about it, the birds seemed normal.
,,Only mammals can get infected so birds and lizards will be fine. Since rabies were used as the base virus the non-mammal species are immune to the bacteria in the fog."
,,Lucky." I whined and kicked some snow.
We reached the ladder and climbed up to the warm room. Tío started to prepare the bird and I made us some tea. He left the feathers for his makeshift arrows.
Since I have to wait for the water to boil, i wanted to check if Eva send something new and also text her my week.
I turned the phone on and instantly noticed that I only had 4% left. It lasted more than I thought it would. I started reading out loud what she texted.
,,Dad isn't doing so well. He's getting more restless and his eyes and hair changed white. He isn't the only one, about half of the people are the same. Some left as soon as their eyes changed but some stayed. I will text tommorow more since I don't have a lot of time right now."
I quickly wrote my summary of the week.
,,Hey, hope it's going to be okay. Here it's cold and it's hard to find food. Fish aren't biting and we found a dead wolf today. It seemed like something killed it. I hope that next winter we will get somewhere more comfortable than this. My phone is almost dead so I can write maybe one more time before it dies."
