I stare at the blue sign with a smirk.
,,I told you that if we follow this road, we will eventually find a town."

Both adults behind me weren't as cheery as me unfortunately. We were running low on luck and food.

All three of us were sick of meat and flatbread and infected animals are the only easy source of food for now.

It is May but it's still hard to find wild vegetables and not all edible greens taste good. Also, a lot of towns and small villages were looted clean.
What people from the forts didn't get the infected got.

And the sleeping situation wasn't good for the past couple of days as well. The more we head south the less tall pines we see.
Currently I can't see any trees at all.

We were lucky that we found a farmhouse yesterday. If not for that house roof, we would be infected.

,,Macklin." Cooper said as he scratched his slowly growing facial hair. He refused to shave it with a knife, like Tío did. ,,Never heard of it."

,,Me neither but let's go. The sun will set at any time." Tío murmured and started walking.

We walked towards the town, and I already saw a gas station that can be our camp tonight.
Cooper must have thought of it as well as he approached the building and walked around it.

,,Looks good." He said and climbed the ladder at the side of the station.
Tío motioned for me to go with his hand.

I climbed the ladder and stood up on the roof, enjoying the break in our trek across the country. Tío climbs up after me and stretches, while Cooper throws his bag to the floor.

,,I will go and try to get anything flammable. You can set the camp." Cooper walked over to the ladder but stopped right before climbing down.

Tío whipped around in his direction and stared into the distance. His eyebrows furrowed in a worry as he scanned the horizon.

Cooper was looking out into the distance as well. His face scrunched up and his posture rigid.
I tried to look at whatever they noticed that I didn't.

I could only see some birds flying in the distance and a slowly setting sun. It wasn't touching the horizon yet, but it would in a half an hour or so.

,,Did you hear that?" Tío slowly muttered.

Cooper hissed an answer.
,,Gunshots."

I blinked and pondered if it was a joke they planned along the way.
,,Gunshots are loud. I didn't hear anything and I'm not that deaf."

Cooper stepped away from the ladder and turned towards me.
,,It was far away but no fire today just in case. It might have been a hunter, a fort member or a bandit, who knows."

The seriousness in his voice was too real to be a joke. Unless he's a really good actor.

Tío nodded and let his bag slide down to the ground.
,,We shouldn't risk it. Tomorrow let's loot along the way and leave the next day."

I watched as they stressed and planned, clearly wanting to avoid any interactions with anyone. Maybe I was just a little bit too relaxed about the whole situation, but I don't really think that everyone we meet is a mass murderer, unlike those two.
I was used to travelling and meeting all sorts of people. From nice elderly people to former drug addicts and criminals.

There were a few situations where I met not so friendly people, but I always got away.

,,Hey Cocoguy, relax a bit. Maybe someone was defending themselves from an animal."
