. VICTORIA MCCOY.
"What did you do..." The quiet voice of my mother from downstairs bounced through the thin walls that hold up the house, she sounded like she was choking back sobs as my father spoke his words of truth to her "I'm sorry... I just-" his words were cut from from the noises made from outside, he may have been still talking but me and my brother could no longer hear anything that they were now saying since the loud cracks of thunder and the rain pelting down onto the roof had made it sound like someone had put marbles into a tin can and started to shake it around.
It's currently 12 A.M, in the middle of the night, my father had just got home from work and before me and Isaac could even go to greet our dad, mum had sent us up to our rooms though Isaac came into my room since he knew I didn't like being in the dark alone, the power had went out a couple moments before dad got home and I was clung to Isaacs side, holding onto him for dear life.
Issac and I have school tomorrow but I don't think we'll be going because whenever mum and dad argue like this things get out of hand and often they're both tired after, soon enough the loud yelling and shouts from my parents could be heard.
"They're arguing again.." my mumble hadn't gone unnoticed by Isaac as he pulled me closer gently patting my back in comfort "it's okay, as long as they don't pull us into it we'll be fine... okay?" Isaac is my older brother, he's four years older than me. He's always been by my side weather it was comforting, helping with schoolwork or even just playing. Sometimes he acts like he could by my parent taking up the roles my parents should be but the only thing they have time for is arguing, it's all they do and in the end both me and Isaac have to help clean up their mess they make after smashing the house up.
I nod my head at him indicating I understood "okay...", it wasn't long until the loud noises of smashing glass had erupted from down the stairs in which made my body jolt "cover your ears Vic" Isaac had murmured. Instantly complying, my hands find their way to cover my ears before Isaacs hands rested over mine adding an extra layer making the silence grow.
The expressions on his face had told me everything I needed too, it was the same as always, one parent blames the other, everything in the kitchen gets thrown around, yelling and shouting always can be heard, we've even had the police called multiple times because of the 'disturbance'.
We sat in silence for a good two hours before they started to calm down so I slipped my hands away from my ears now me and Isaac could hear their argument from my room now as the rain and thunder was quieting down. The main topic that they were shouting on about was my older sister, she died a little over 3 years ago and both my parents blame themselves... and each other. "You let her go to that party, you let her stay out late, you let her leave!" My mother shouted followed by another loud smashing noise but this time I think it was wood and not glass breaking "she was 17 years old! We had to let her live her life and experience those things, you can't blame me for something some man did to her. I get it your sad but she was my daughter too!"
My fathers words had silenced my mother for a moment before she found another excuse to throw at him, my oldest sister was killed and raped by a man at a party she went to "but we knew what was going to happen, it was around that time of year and you let her go!" My mothers voice broken mid sentence which made it obvious she was now crying.
"That time of year?.." I whispered and look over at Isaac with confusion melted into my innocent eyes "don't worry about it Vic" he sent me a smile of reassurance, every time this subject of 'that time of year' gets brought up I'm always left confused and anxious about it since no one actually has told me what it is because I'll learn about it when I'm older.
A defeated sigh escaped my lip before I give Isaac a pleading glance "but Isaac please tell me, I want to know what's going on." My plea only seemed to have danced through one ear and out the other ear as he shook his head "I can't Vic" he tried to sound stern with me but as I continued to beg and plead for the answer he soon snapped "fine!" He threw his hands up in surrender before he let out a huff.
A grin crept across my lip as my eyes now glistening with anticipation awaiting for him to tell me "every year a group of teenagers get picked, they all get targeted by an attacker." He paused dropping his gaze to the floor before us "the attacker then... gets rid of them." My smile dropped as the confusion slid across my facial features "like... they die?" I tilt my head to the left as my gaze locks onto Isaac who slowly nods his head "so unluckily Giana was one of the few teenagers picked" Isaac then finally answered all the questions I had been asking for the 3 years Giana was gone for.
Giana is my older sister, she would have been 19 this year if she hadn't been taken from us, she was cool and very pretty I remember standing by her door and I'd watch her put on her make up and curl her hair with the wand looking machine. She'd even sometimes do my hair for me when I'd ask and I miss her a lot.
The night continues in random drafts of silence, shouting and glass shattering while the small sprinkle of rain echoed in the background.
I was 8 years old that night, the night I found out what was actually happening in the small town of Bechtel. My town isn't cursed nor is it in the bad books it's just misunderstood on so many levels that someone had to go around and start murdering innocent people for their own guilty fun and pleasure.
As of right now I'm sat in the car with Isaac, we're both now 17 and 21 it's been a couple years and a lot has changed in that time. "Hey turn the music up for me" Isaac murmured as he accelerated and started to turn the car to the right as the light turned green, I nodded and turned the volume dial up, it wasn't music that was playing it was the morning reports.
"Good morning Bechtel! It's now officially spring, December is right around the corner meaning Christmas sales will be coming back!" As the news stations reporting woman had continued to talk about traffic and where to get the best Christmas trees my gaze shifted to look out the window, the warm sun beating against my skin through the window while the sight of the leaves regrowing on the trees and the beginning of the flowers beginning to bloom had caught my attention.
Then came the morning cautioning part of the report "enough about Christmas sales, I believe everyone had a place to be as of right now school or work please be careful as it is now the official time of year. All teenagers are now to be extra cautious whil-" my brother was quick to speak over the radio as he changed the stations with a low grumble of words that I couldn't quite hear, he's not so fond on that topic and trust me neither am I but the morning cautions have somehow made me feel more safe? I don't know but I know I don't want to end up like Moriah Reid, Lorelei Holloway and Maeve Fitz.
Everyone knows about their case, it was the very beginning of this horrible situation.
"Alright, we're here try to stay out of trouble you little shit" Isaac chuckled as he pulled into one of the empty parking bays in the front of the school, the high schools building was large and definitely held an old English vibe "yeah I got it, I'll see you after school. Make sure to tell mum to take her medicine." I reminded Isaac and slapped his shoulder and got out of the car before he could get me back.
