“You didn’t tell me there’s a Ball.”
Phoenix woke up the sound of Sophie’s accusing voice. Sophie held up a glittering snowflake invitation, Agatha’s name in pearls. She immediately noticed Phoenix sitting up and rubbing her eyes.
“You have one too, Phoenix.” She said, handing it to her.
“Thanks.” Phoenix looked at it, the inscription curly.
Dear Phoenix
You are formally invited to the EVERS’ SNOW BALL
“Oh, who cares about a stupid Ball?” Agatha groaned. “We’ll be long gone. Now make sure that poem talks about who he is as a person. His honour, his valour, his cour—”
Sophie was smelling the invitation now. Phoenix politely looked away, Sophie was a bit much first thing in the morning.
“Sophie, listen to me! The closer we get to the Ball, the more Tedros looks for a date! The more he looks for a date, the more he falls in love with someone else! The more he falls in love with someone else, the more he leaves us here to die! Got it?”
“But I want to be his date.”
“YOU’RE NOT INVITED!”
Sophie pursed her lips.
“Sophie, Tedros has to kiss you now! Otherwise we’ll never get home!”
“You’re going home?” Phoenix asked, not wanting to voice her other question about why Sophie was going to kiss Tedros. But her question was unheard anyway.
“Honestly, do they even check invitations at a Ball?”
Agatha snatched the invitation. “Stupid me. I thought you wanted to stay alive!”
“But I can’t miss the Ball!”
Agatha shoved her towards the door. “Use the Tunnel of Trees—”
When Agatha returned, Phoenix was fully dressed and braiding her hair into a single plait.
“You’re going home?” Phoenix asked.
“Yes.” Agatha said. “I’m sorry to leave you behind, but I don’t belong here.”
“Then I’ll help you.” Phoenix said. “If there’s anything I can do to help, let me know. I don’t like my friends being unhappy. I’ll miss you of course, but…”
Agatha hugged Phoenix tightly.
“Thank you.” She whispered.
Phoenix ate lunch with Kiko as she taught Kiko how to properly speak to birds.
“You’re getting the hang of it.” Phoenix smiled, praising her sweet friend. “Yay Kiko! What animal would you want to do after birds?”
Kiko thought carefully.
“What are you—YOU’LL RUIN EVERYTHI—”
At the sound of Agatha’s voice, they turned to see Sophie flounce to the Evers’ side, plop next to Tedros, and hold out her pail.
“Hello, handsome. Want some of my... feet?”
Tedros misfired his marble into Chaddick’s eye. The entire Clearing went silent. Phoenix prayed she was talking about whatever was in that bucket, because if she was talking about her actual feet, that was very strange…
Tedros turned to Sophie. “Your girlfriend’s calling.”
Sophie followed his eyes to Agatha, waving her off.
