Phoenix and Mona scaled a tree and hid in its branches, scanning the horizon. They could see tiny dots moving, whether girl or boy, they couldn’t tell. Mona went to use her finger to light up their surrounding area, but Phoenix stopped her quickly, raising a finger to her lips and pointing to the east. Mona strained her ears.

Voices. They could hear voices. Well, one voice and two grumbles.

“Don’t attack yet.” Phoenix told her quietly. “Stay still and don’t move. They may not notice we’re here.”

If they didn’t engage a battle, they would last until daylight, handing them the win. Hopefully the rest of the girls figured that too.

They watched as the three figures came into view. Ravan, Vex, and a boy Phoenix didn’t recognise.

“I’ve told you over and over.” Aric said to Ravan and Vex. “It’s not hard. Just kill the first girl that comes across your path. Or however many, considering they’ll travel with friends.”

He gave a grin.

“Say, lucky for you, I can see one just above me. Kill her.” Aric said. “And make a clean job of it.”

Ravan glanced up and saw Phoenix’s eyes in the shadows. They sparkled with laughter. Aric wasn’t keeping his voice overly quiet, so the girl heard his every word and obviously found it funny. She retreated into the branches, the leaves not even rustling.

“Good luck boys.” Aric tightened his grip on their shoulders. “Don’t fail.”

He disappeared and Ravan and Vex exchanged glances.

“It’s two against one.” Vex shrugged. “It’s not very fair.”

“Knowing Phoenix, she could take every one of the boy army on.” Ravan said evenly.

Vex paled. “It’s Phoenix up there?! Well…we’re stuffed.”

“Not wrong.” Ravan said, climbing the tree, Vex following after him.

Mona and Phoenix looked back at them.

“So, are you going to…what did that guy say again…?” Phoenix thought for a second. “Ah…kill us and make a clean job of it?”

“How stupid do you think I am?” Ravan snorted. “Only someone dumb would take you on.”

Phoenix grinned. Mona and Vex exchanged confused glances, then looked back at Phoenix and Ravan. They were still smiling at each other.

“Get a room.” Vex muttered and the two quickly looked away.

“Um…guys…?” Mona squeaked.

“What’s up?” Phoenix turned to her quickly.

Mona pointed upwards. The four could see red eyes peering down at them. Joined by another, and another, and another, until at least fifteen pairs of eyes were staring at them.

“Oh no…it’s a teacher’s trap!” Vex said, his voice so quiet they barely caught it.

They waited a few seconds, then heard a clicking sound.
