Phoenix’s slippered feet barely made any noise on the floor as she ran to the hall of murals. She ran past Ravan and Vex, who looked surprised, then Kiko and Mona who called out to her but she didn’t answer.
She slowed her pace, desperately scanning the murals depicting Snow White’s bloody murder, then the Little Mermaid’s…her feet came to a stop, face paling and feeling ill.
The mural depicted a woman with bushy black hair and a wicked, wicked grin throwing two people out of a tall tower. Her parents, their faces filled with fear. Phoenix’s stomach churned, and then her gaze hardened. She fled just as Ravan and Kiko rounded the corner to check on her.
The young princess stormed up to the School Master’s classroom and slammed open the door. It was void of class, since it was now lunch time.
“It’s polite to knock, Phoenix.” Rafal said civilly from where he sat behind his desk, unsurprised when Phoenix ignored him, smoke started to come off her hair, threatening to ignite.
“What the hell is this?!” she hissed, holding up the scroll with loopy handwriting. Rafal looked up, a lazy smile on his face.
“Well, I’d say that’s a letter.” He replied and flames really did come off of Phoenix’s hair, not bothering to disguise her temperament on the matter.
“It says my parents are dead, there’s even a new mural in the hall.” Phoenix slammed the letter down. “What are you playing at, sir?”
Rafal’s eye twitched slightly as she sneered at him. Just because he looked to be the same age as her didn’t mean she could treat him with such blatant disrespect...
“The stories are being rewritten, Phoenix.” He said. “Evil’s winning.”
“I thought Evil winning for something of this generation, not going back and ripping families apart.” Phoenix folded her arms, eyes narrowed with pure hate. “Those were my parents! They built lives after their Ever After! They had sons to raise!”
“And your brothers are still alive and well.” Rafal said, tone turning cold. “Remember your place, Phoenix. You’re on track to be a Leader. Sophie and I are the sole reason you and Ravan get a chance at a Never After.” Phoenix opened her mouth to protest. “Don’t think I haven’t noticed you two over the course of your schooling, separated by Good and Evil, Boys and Girls…now’s your chance.”
Phoenix’s fire died out, but her eyes were still narrowed.
“You know what?” she said, turning. “I’d give anything to actually have a good ending with the boy I love, but I’d happily give everything up for things to go back to Good and Evil. Which it should be soon since Sophie’s up and left.”
Rafal’s eyes narrowed and with a swipe of his hand, reopened the cut on her cheek. She flinched.
“Sophie will come back. Everything is Old and New now. Don’t question it and you’ll get your happy ending.”
“I don’t think I’ll believe that unless Sophie comes back.” Phoenix spat and slammed the door behind her.
She made it back to her room and slumped against the door, the realisation that her parents were dead finally hit her. And she allowed herself to cry.
It was incredibly awkward for both Hort and Blitz as they walked side by side in dead silence. Hort’s eyes were glued to the distance figures of Sophie and Tedros until they disappeared over the top of a hill. Blitz’s eyes continuously darted around, searching the bushes and path for any sign of imminent danger.
