AN: Time skip to five years later.

Michael popped his gum as he sat on the bus. He would have to pick up his siblings and Charlie in about a half hour. Enough time to go home, grab a snack, and briefly bask in the AC. Last day before summer vacation and the fifth anniversary of his father stabbing Charlie. As the bus rolled along the road, he reflected on the events that had happened immediately after. Uncle Henry had called the police, his father had disappeared, Uncle Henry took control of the business and adopted the three Afton kids.

It was a lot nicer in the Emily household. Sure, Michael still felt bad about Uncle Henry having to deal with them. He was pretty much the single father of four since his wife had left only a year after Charlie was born, not to mention single-handedly running a business. But Michael tried to make up for it by helping out around the house, picking the other three up after school, and even not teasing Evan as much.

Next year Charlie would be old enough to walk the other two home without Michael, so he'd be able to get a job. Maybe he'd get one over the summer. He cringed out the thought of working all summer as the bus squealed to a stop. Maybe next year. One last free summer couldn't hurt.

Michael hopped out of the bus, nodding at the driver before dashing inside of the house, sighing in relief as the cold air hit him. He glanced down at his watch. He didn't have as long as he thought. No matter. He grabbed a thing of cheese puffs before backtracking with a sigh and stuffing three more into his backpack and dashing off to the middle school to pick up Charlie and Evan. After that, it would be the elementary school to pick up Elizabeth.

It didn't take him long to trudge over to the middle school, but Evan and Charlie were already waiting outside for him. Charlie chatted with a girl who appeared to be her friend, while Evan bounced on his toes, waiting for Michael. Michael couldn't help but reflect on how his brother had seemed much happier these past five years, whether that was a result of Michael teasing him less or being away from William— though it was most likely both— Michael never asked.

"Yo, hand over your lunch money," Michael joked as he walked up to his brother and adopted sister.

"Oh no. Someone help us. I'm shaking in terror," Charlie said in a dry tone after saying goodbye to her friend.

"Mike!" Evan shouted and hugged Michael in delight, as if being picked up wasn't a part of the daily routine.

"Soldier up, time to rescue the damsel in distress," Michael said as he held back a slight grin. As much as he tried to be nicer now, he couldn't go completely soft on Evan. Besides, Elizabeth would be devastated if they took too much longer.

"You got Fredbear in your backpack still?" Charlie asked. Evan's old Fredbear plush had mysteriously disappeared about four years ago, though Evan seemed satisfied with its replacement. He unzipped his backpack and glanced in before looking up with a nod. While he wasn't as dependent on it as he used to be, he still preferred having a comfort item during his first year of middle school.

It was an even shorter walk to Elizabeth's school. She was tapping her foot impatiently and stopped as the trio walked up. "Finally! I thought I was going to die of heat stroke before you all came!" she said, perhaps being a tad dramatic.

"She didn't mean it literally," Charlie consoled Evan at his visible concern for his sister. He nodded, but still seemed a bit unsettled. Charlie gave Elizabeth a significant look.

She threw up her hands in surrender. "Fine, fine. Yes, I was just joking. But can we PLEASE get going, I'm turning into a puddle— not literally of course."

Michael nodded and tossed everyone some cheese puffs. "Here, these should help you die slower," he said as he began walking. Charlie caught her's with ease, though Elizabeth and Evan fumbled theirs.

"See ya never again, you school for children, I'M GOING TO MIDDLE SCHOOL NEXT YEAR!" Elizabeth exclaimed triumphantly, pumping her fist in the air at the thought of being so grown up. Michael opened his mouth but quickly closed it when Charlie shook her head.

"Ugh, I don't even want to think about next year yet," Evan grumbled. He was used to having Charlie look out for him, but with her going with Michael to high school next year, he was already dreading it.

"Don't worry Ev, I'll beat up anyone who insults you, just like elementary!" Elizabeth declared proudly as they all finally began to follow Michael and eat.

"Lizzie, I don't want you to beat people up. That's part of why I'm worried," Evan whined.

Charlie dropped back to stand behind the two younger kids. "No need to worry about it yet though, right? What do you guys wanna do over the summer?"

"Go to the beach!" Elizabeth immediately declared.

"Nuh-uh, we should go to the pool," Evan insisted.

Charlie laughed slightly. "We have time for both, you know," she scolded teasingly.
