Michael cringed, with how loud Evan slammed the phone back against the wall, there was no way Nessa didn't hear.
But even if she did notice, she didn't care. Her mood was as pleasant as it was when she locked them in that room. "Mr. Ragland will be here in about thirty minutes to pick you four up, though knowing how troublesome you lot are I'm sure it'll be at least an hour before I'm rid of you."
Elizabeth glared at her. "I won't hesitate to bite you again if you come near us."
Nessa raised an eyebrow. "I'm utterly shaking in fear. I see no reason to get any closer to any of you than necessary. Just figured I ought to make sure no one had made a mess and let you know that you're going to be picked up soon."
"I suppose we have been rather polite guests back here," Charlie said snidely before staring Nessa down. Without blinking or breaking eye contact, she slowly pushed a mug off of the desk she was standing next to.
To Michael's surprise, Nessa simply stared at the mug and gave a defeated sigh. Looking more tired than angry at this point, she rubbed her right arm and exited the room, locking the door behind her without another word.
"Well. That was weird," Michael remarked. "Evan, you good?"
Evan took a deep breath and glanced at his still shaky hands. "Yeah. I'm fine. We should probably start figuring out how we're going to stall once Father gets here."
Elizabeth sat in one of the office chairs and spun around in circles on it. "Plans never go well. I say we see what the situation looks like when it happens and do whatever we think is best from there."
Michael shook his head. "Just because there may be construction on the road doesn't mean we shouldn't bring a road map."
Charlie blinked. "Michael. It is far too early in the morning for metaphors."
Elizabeth stopped spinning and stared at the door. "We could try to break out."
Evan walked up to examine the hinges and lock on the door. "How so? It's not like any of us know lock picking."
Michael stared at Charlie who raised her hands in defense. "Hey, what are you looking at me for?"
"You've stolen a car. Did your friends teach you how to break or pick locks as well?"
"No! One of them is studying to become a mechanic and the junkyard had a crappy lock that practically turned to dust as soon as we touched it. We're more likely to be able to break or kick down the door or something."
Michael both felt and saw the stares of all three of his siblings. "I don't... fine. But you three try and come up with a plan."
----------------------------------------------------------------
Twenty-five minutes. He spent twenty-five minutes trying to get the stupid door open and the others hadn't even come up with a half-decent plan. Now all he had was exhaustion and a very sore shoulder. Michael realized in hindsight he should've known that slamming his shoulder against the door was idiotic, but it worked in movies!
He had commandeered the chair from Elizabeth and was now slouched in it as the others continued to come up with increasingly terrible plans. He wasn't even surprised when the door opened. Charlie seemed mad. Evan seemed anxious. Elizabeth just looked mildly disappointed.
William walked in with his usual, unsettlingly cheerful smile. He promptly ignored Charlie. "I hear you three have been rather difficult for your sister to manage?"
Elizabeth squinted at him. "Eh?"
William tilted his head. "Oh dear. Did she really not tell you?" He clicked his tongue in disappointment before exiting the room for a moment, quickly coming back with Nessa. "You didn't properly greet your siblings, I hear, Vanessa?"
"I wasn't entirely sure... I didn't want to assume..." she muttered, rubbing her right arm again.
"Come now, Michael looks exactly like me, don't you agree?"
Michael barely held back a disgusted look at the last comment. He glanced between Nessa— Vanessa? He wasn't entirely sure what her name was at this point. Either way, he glanced between her and his father. "Since when did we have an older sister?"
William seemed more than pleased to provide backstory. "You see, about three years ago I decided to adopt a child. I met Vanessa while I was in a library doing a bit of research. Bright young child. I needed a hand in building the new line of animatronics and she was about to age out of the adoption system. Naturally from there I adopted her. Of course, I did have to... alter a few police records so that I could do so, but it was no matter. She was absolutely instrumental in getting the business started. Pity she moved out and decided to work at this dreadful rest stop the day she turned eighteen."
Nessa cringed at the mention of her moving out. "It's not like I've cut contact with you or anything," she grumbled. She was much quieter than she had been earlier.
"You're not wrong, the work you've done here has been tremendously helpful," William responded, though his tone still carried some resentment.
"What sort of work?" Michael asked impulsively, only thinking about getting William to stay here and talk until Henry showed up.
William scowled. "None of your business. Now, we ought to get going."
"Elizabeth looks like she's about to throw up!" Charlie blurted.
Elizabeth looked confused for a moment before nodding and making a gagging noise. "Very sick. Can't travel." She 'accidentally' knocked over her backpack to reveal a great deal of empty candy wrappers.
William rubbed his forehead. "One hour. If you're not feeling better by then we're leaving anyway. My car better still be operational, I don't want to have to call another taxi." He stormed out of the room.
Nessa tossed a paper airplane into the room before leaving. Charlie caught it, looking befuddled. She noticed there seemed to be a message written on it. She carefully unfolded it.
'I'm sorry.'
AN: I went back and edited out William having the three Afton kids go by different first names since I don't think it really served any purpose to the story.
