"𝐏𝐎𝐏𝐂𝐎𝐑𝐍, 𝐏𝐈𝐙𝐙𝐀, 𝐂𝐎𝐊𝐄, and vodka. Missing anything?"
Tonight was one of Jaime's favourite types of nights. It was tradition for him and Reina to spend the night before the last final exam doing anything but studying.
It had started during their second semester of their first year—they had realized that there was nothing left for them to study, and they were far too tired to keep reviewing—and since then, the night before the last exam was always a day he looked forward to. Those nights varied from laser tag to a simple night in, though he never minded whichever it was—as long as he was with her, he was happy. This tradition was probably one of very few things he'd miss about school.
Of course, he could still have these kinds of nights with her, but there was some sort of weirdly pleasant, assuring feeling, knowing that there was an exam the next day that he didn't have to stress about.
They had spent a few days thinking of what they'd do—it was the very last time, after all. It had to be special.
Nothing incredible came to mind, unfortunately. So instead, they settled for simple: Reina had picked a game (she had yet to tell him which one), and they'd play it with the accompaniment of snacks and alcohol. It wasn't anything super exciting, though, honestly, he'd rather a night of just him and her rather than a night out. He just hoped she picked a good game.
He loved these nights. Even with the exam looming over them, he never felt the anxiety blooming in his chest or had his usual thoughts of the possibility of failing. He was ready for tomorrow's exam, he had the whole night with Reina, and he couldn't be happier.
Reina gave him a grin as she sat beside him on his couch. "I think we're good."
Jaime grabbed the vodka and twisted the cap off. Of course, they couldn't drink too much—they had an exam, after all. But just a little to keep them relaxed wouldn't do much harm.
Once he had poured a fair amount into both cups that Reina had brought, he added a generous amount of Coke, and handed Reina's to her.
"By five PM tomorrow, it'll all be over." Reina sighed, leaning her head back against the couch. She took a long drink from her cup, her eyebrows raising just above the rim. "Can you believe it?"
"Not really," Jaime chuckled before taking a sip. It truly was crazy to think that university was over—the past four years had flown by in an instant. Every time he thought about it, he got a little sad. That is, until he remembered that he wouldn't have to write anymore ten-page essays. "It's so surreal. No more studying."
"Not until law school, at least," she pointed out before pausing. "Well, if you go. Have you decided yet?"
Jaime pursed his lips. That question has been running through his head recently, though the answer was clear to him. "I want to, but . . . I mean, I can't put my family in any more debt; it's hard enough as is. I'll just make do with this degree. For now, at least."
It wasn't like being a lawyer had been his dream job since he was a kid, but he always got that sinking feeling in his stomach every time he thought about it. Sure, he would still probably be able to get a decent-enough job with this degree, but it almost felt as if he had spent the last four years studying so much for nothing.
Reina seemed disappointed in his answer, though she still gave him a half-smile. They've discussed it enough for him to know that she wasn't surprised by his choice. "I don't know if I could survive law school without you."
