"𝐇𝐎𝐋𝐘 𝐒𝐇𝐈𝐓, 𝐘𝐎𝐔𝐑 room is so cool!"
"Thanks." Milagro grinned, doing a small twirl before plopping onto her bed. "Took a while to convince my mom to let me put my pictures up."
Reina's eyes wandered around the tens of drawings that were taped onto the wall. She had gotten brief glimpses during their Facetime calls, but, of course, that couldn't compare to seeing them in person. "Why didn't she let you?"
"She was afraid the paint would peel off when I took it off." She shrugged. "Still don't know if it will. That's a problem for later."
"How'd you convince her?"
Milagro scrunched her face. "Well, it wasn't so much as 'convince her' as it was me putting it up and then being like, 'Hey, Mom, look what I did!'"
Reina giggled as she grabbed the suitcase she had left beside the door. "Well, I'm glad it worked."
Milagro stood up as Reina dragged the suitcase toward the air mattress that had been set up beside the bed. "I'll be back. I'm feeling the need to bother my brother. It's been too long."
Reina chuckled as the other girl left the room. She opened up her suitcase, debating whether to unpack or save that trouble for the next day. It didn't take long for her to settle on 'tomorrow' for that question.
She grabbed a pair of sweatpants and a random t-shirt. She locked Milagro's door before quickly changing, and she tossed her clothes into her suitcase.
She sat back down on the air mattress with a sigh. It felt good to be in a room like this; so full and bursting with life. Her apartment in Gotham had been pretty boring—nothing but plain grey walls with the occasional plant (though it would die shortly after her buying it). She couldn't afford to get decorations, nor did she have the time to do any painting.
Milagro's room really was gorgeous. Along with the art that ranged from sketches to graffiti, there were vinyls, photos of her and her family (Reina especially liked the ones of younger Jaime—she could definitely use those to blackmail him), and string lights that were slung from wall to wall. A few potted flowers were lined up on the windowsill, in full bloom. This room was perfect for Milagro.
She tucked her suitcase into the corner and then flopped onto the air mattress. It was pretty comfortable, so she definitely didn't mind that she'd have to sleep on this for the next little while. She pulled out her phone to see that she hadn't missed much—there was a text from Heidi asking how the flight was, and Duolingo all but begging her to keep her streak.
The door creaked open a few minutes later, and Milagro walked in, a bottle of beer in hand.
"Mili!" Reina gave an over dramatic gasp that earned an eye roll in response. "You're drinking? Beer?"
"Oh, 'cause you've never seen me drink before."
A knock came on the doorframe, and Jaime peeked his head in. He smiled as his eyes met Reina's, and his gaze then moved to his sister, who had sat on the edge of her bed. "Mind if I steal Rein for a moment?"
"Oh, come on, man," Milagro whined, "you've had her for four years! I just got her!"
Reina laughed as she got to her feet. "Just for a moment."
She closed the door behind her as she stepped out, and she gave Jaime raised eyebrows.
He nodded his head toward the front door. "Wanna sit outside for a little?"
"Sure."
It was a little chillier outside than it had been before, so Reina wished she had grabbed a sweater on the way out. Jaime led her to the two white yard chairs that were separated by a tiny side table, which had a six-pack of beers on top (though two cans were already missing).
