"𝐖𝐇𝐀𝐓 𝐄𝐋𝐒𝐄 𝐖𝐀𝐒 on the list?"
Jaime pulled out the crinkled paper that had been shoved into his jean pocket. He mentally checked off everything they had already grabbed—ground beef, all the fruits and vegetables, and crackers—before telling Milagro:
"Still need chips, water, juice, and that cereal that Uncle Rudy loves."
Milagro peered into the cart that Jaime was pushing before nodding. "Got it. I think the chip section is closest."
He glanced at his watch as he followed Milagro. "We better hurry. Dinner's at six, and it's already five."
They quickly reached the chip aisle, and Milagro tossed in their usuals of Doritos and Cheetos.
"Oh," Jaime suddenly said, "grab the Sunchips, too—the cheddar ones."
Milagro furrowed her eyebrows, though she still reached for the orange bag. "Sunchips? We never get that."
"It's Reina's favourite."
"I see." A grin spread on her face as she put it in the cart. "Speaking of Reina—"
"Oh, boy," he muttered, now pushing the cart in the direction of the drinks.
"Is it official, or what?"
He resisted a smile. It had been about a week since they had made it 'official,' and it had been probably the best week of his life so far. Somehow, they had managed to not let it slip that they were together yet. "Yeah, I guess."
"Have you told everyone yet?"
"No."
"What?" she whined as they reached the water. "Why not?"
He gave a small grunt as he picked up the case of water bottles and slid it into the lower tray of the cart. "You know them, Mili, they'll get all excited and probably overwhelm Reina and scare her away."
"Oh, come on, bro," she tsked, grabbing a couple of juices. "She's been living with us for more than a month now; she's used to them."
"I don't know, this is different."
He had no clue when he'd end up telling his family—he and Reina hadn't really talked about it yet. He had no doubt his family would be overbearing or say things that would make both of them uncomfortable. That morning they woke up cuddling on the couch was enough proof.
Obviously, it'd have to be pretty soon. They all lived under the same roof, so someone was bound to find out soon enough. Besides, they would all kill Jaime if he waited too long.
"Okay, just the cereal and we're done," Milagro muttered. Her phone dinged, and after she checked it, she sighed. "Uncle Rudy says to hurry up."
Jaime rolled his eyes. "We've been here for, like, twenty minutes."
"So," Milagro said as they headed toward the cereal aisle, which was practically on the other side of the store, "what else is new with you?"
He wrinkled his nose. "You see me practically twenty-four-seven. I think you'd know if there was anything new with me."
She shrugged. "You don't know what's new with me."
"What's new with you?"
"So, basically, do you remember two of my friends from high school? Sabrina and Clarissa?" she immediately began.
He squinted his eyes. Those names sounded familiar, but no faces were coming to mind. "Uh . . ."
"Sabrina had a crush on you," she reminded him. "And Clarissa's the one that started a food fight on the first day."
