𝐑𝐄𝐈𝐍𝐀 𝐅𝐑𝐎𝐖𝐍𝐄𝐃 𝐀𝐒 she situated herself on the floor beside the couch.
Rudy had—after covering him with a blanket—moved Jaime to the couch. He was still knocked out.
She had decided to stop thinking about whatever the fuck had just happened. The more she thought about it, the more confused and anxious she got. All she could think about was what the hell they were going to do now.
She slowly grazed her fingers against his bare shoulder, taking in some of the warmth. She, more than anyone, knew exactly what it felt like to have unwanted powers thrust upon them. And like her powers, she wasn't so sure there was a way to get rid of it.
Gently, she dug her hands under his shoulder and lifted him to look at his back. She winced at the sight. He was definitely gonna freak out when he saw that. The bug-thing had planted itself in his back, glowing with a line of blue following down his spine.
Rocio came over, a frown on her face as she peered over at him. "Still not awake?"
Nana came over, humming, with a small bottle of VapoRub in hand. She twisted the lid off—Reina crinkled her nose when the strong scent hit her—and she waved it under Jaime's nose.
Jaime's eyes shot open. His eyebrows furrowed, he let out a few grunts of confusion as he looked around at them. "What are you guys doing?"
Nana cooed as she placed a hand on his forehead. His mother muttered a prayer.
"You okay, son?" asked his father.
"He's alive," remarked Rudy.
"Jaime," Reina murmured, rubbing his shoulder. "You feeling okay?"
He lifted the blanket, and his eyes widened—obviously, he realized that he wasn't wearing any clothes. He let out an exclamation as he put the blanket back over his lap.
"No," he breathed out in disbelief, looking around at his family with fear etched on his face. He sat himself up. "No way!"
Reina sighed. So, he had figured out that his family had seen, well . . . everything.
He stood up abruptly, keeping the blanket tightly wrapped around his lower half.
"Jaime, listen," Milagro said gently, "there's something on—"
"No." Jaime shook his head, hurrying toward his room. "Not now, Milagro."
"Jaime, I'm serious!"
"No, no, no! Not now, Milagro! Not now!"
"There's something on your—"
The door slammed shut.
"Hey, Jaime," Rudy yelled, "keep that blanket now that it touched your chorizo."
"I'll go in," Reina muttered.
She opened the door only slightly so that the family couldn't see inside, squeezing herself through the small crack.
Jaime, who had both hands on either side of his mirror, didn't seem to notice her presence as he muttered to himself. "You can't fly. Superman can fly. Those people on that bus were okay. They're fine. Okay."
She furrowed her eyebrows. "What bus?"
Jaime let out a small yelp, turning only his head towards her. "Rein, don't come in!"
"Oh, relax," she scoffed, pressing her back against the door. "It's not like I haven't seen all that."
"Not like this!"
