STAB,
CHAPTER FOURTEENADAM DIDN'T GO to Zara's memorial. He couldn't. Not when guilt still had him like a hunter with a deer in their scope. He tried. He tried to go, to see her one last time, but he couldn't. He didn't want to remember her like that - cold and lifeless. He wanted to remember her as she was - vibrant, amazing. Ethereal. She had been his light bringer. She was his lighthouse in the storm, and he was a ship set to crash.
Without her, he had nothing.
He was all alone in a cruel world that rejected him time and time again. The world would keep turning no matter what the cost. Not a single soul was worth stopping it for. It didn't matter that his world had just come to a screeching halt. No one else's had. So, the world would do what it did best: turn.
But Adam did have one thing to do. At least he still had the strength for that. His smile was pleasant as he knocked on the outer glass door. Or at least he hoped it was. It was as pleasant as he could manage. A young woman, around the same age as Zara, opened the door. "Uh, hi, I'm Adam Moore", he greeted. "I was a friend of Zara's."
"I know who you are", the girl informed. "Zara liked you a lot", she added, stepping back from the door and gesturing him inside. "Please, come in", she added, getting him inside.
"I'm so sorry for your loss", Adam said softly as he entered the large home, closing the door behind him.
"It was a loss for you too", she pointed out. "But thank you."
"I'm not gonna stay long, I just... brought a gift for Zoey", he informed. He'd wanted to stay and talk with Zoey's adoptive family, he really had, but... It was hard to be in a space where she once lived. It seemed like she should be there. Every corner was filled with her laughter, and her voice. The fact that she wasn't coming down those stairs was cruel and unfair.
"Of course", the girl smiled. "Let's go." She led him up the vast stairs and into a nursery. It was ridiculously pink, but Adam couldn't see Zara being any less than this level of extra - especially when it came to her daughter. This was a very her thing to do. "I'll let you have your moment. I'm right downstairs if you need me", she said gently. She didn't close the door, but left quietly.
Adam made his way over to the crib, where the one year old was blinking lazily up at him. She didn't seem to have a care in the world. Adam was both grateful and sad for that. This poor baby had no clue that her entire life had just been altered.
She didn't fuss as he picked her up. She was so trusting, and kind. Babies were always like that though, weren't they? Unless a person was truly evil, they just came right along for the ride. "Hi, Zoey. I'm a friend of Zara's."
This caught her attention. She didn't know what any of those words meant, but she knew that the word 'Zara' was associated with her mother to some degree. "Ma-ma?" Her eyes looked hopeful as Adam sat in the chair with her. Her chubby hands gripped his shirt tightly as she attempted to stand, as if Zara was simply hiding behind Adam and she wasn't tall enough to see.
A single tear dripped down Adam's cheeks as he held the toddler closer to his chest. "Yeah... mama." And he didn't have the heart to tell her she wasn't with him. So, instead, he just held her close. Maybe if he wished and hoped hard enough, time would magically turn back.
