Karla had been in hospital for two weeks now and was doing well - she was still in a lot of pain from the gun wounds and was doing physiotherapy to help her walk after the accident. It was a long process and she didn't feel like she got much better each session which was just starting to get her down.
Her visits from family were still frequent, but she had told her mom she didn't need her to stay overnight anymore as she knew the older woman was tired. So, it was only Wednesday and Sunday nights Kris spent the night with her and Karla was truly happy with that. Her sisters and Billie all made sure she never went a day without seeing anyone.
It wasn't like she was able to talk much through the visits - her speech was often slurred and she struggled to speak when it got to the evening and she was tired. The doctors have said she can do speech therapy when she is stronger but that they would focus more on the physical side of her injuries first to avoid exhaustion. It was just hard on her: Karla was tired.
Her visits mainly consisted of card games, which the doctors said were good to use her brain and moving her hands so that was a plus. So, that was what was happening now with a game of Uno with Billie, Kendall and Kim.
"Yes!" Karla cheered as she got rid of her deck of cards first.
"You're definitely cheating!" Kim exclaimed, "There's no way you can win each time."
"I've been playing everyday for weeks now." Karla slurred, "Multiple times a day."
Billie just looked at her with a smile, she loved the visits when Karla seemed so happy. There were too many sleepy miserable visits that got her feeling so upset. She'll always think 'what if' when it comes to the accident - Billie reminds herself to just be grateful that she's still here.
"You gotta let me have it," Karla joked, "If I can't walk or talk properly yet at least let me be the 'uno master' without question."
Kendall chuckled dryly.
"Another game?" Karla asked, though she could barely talk.
"I think you need some rest." Billie chuckled, "You seem tired."
Karla shrugged, "I haven't done anything."
Kendall frowned, "You're recovering," She said, "You need all the rest you can get."
"Can we watch a movie?"
Karla not fighting it told all them that she was much more tired than she wanted to let on. She was putting on a brave face and they all knew that.
Kim smiled, "What do you wanna watch?"
"Home alone."
"It's the end of October!" Kendall laughed.
"So? We can get in the spirit!" Karla exclaimed, grabbing the tv remote, "Wait..."
"What?" Four voices replied in fear.
"It's your birthday soon!" Karla said, turning to Kendall with an upset glance, "What's the date?"
"The 30th." Billie said.
"I can leave for your birthday." Karla said confidently.
Kim and Kendall both shared glances - there was no way she could leave by then, but there was no point having that discussion right now.
Karla was out like a light only 15 minutes in and Kendall and Kim decided to leave but Billie said she would stay until the girl woke up. Kim and Kendall went their separate ways back to their own homes and Billie laid across the bed holding onto Karla's hair.
Billie thought back to London only a few months ago and felt like she was grieving the girl she used to know. She wanted to be able to go out with her and travel and go to concerts and do all the things they had talked about. Billie would never leave. But she wishes certain things hadn't happened.

Another few days had passed and Karla was upset that she couldn't leave for Kendall's birthday, but there was some good news in that her doctors said she could look to leave in a couple of weeks. That still felt like forever for her but at least she was getting somewhere.
Right now she was hanging out with Kourtney, Khloe and Penelope when she started to feel unwell. Her head began to throb and she felt sick and dizzy.
"Get Penelope away." She slurred, wanting the girl sat next to her not to be close as she felt so unwell.
Penelope quickly got off the bed, looking slightly offended and Kourtney and Khloe looked on with confused faces. Karla quickly rolled to the side and vomited, Kourtney wasted no time in rushing to Karla's side and pushing her hair back.
"Somethings wrong..." Karla slurred.
The younger girl's body started to convulse and the nurse was immediately called. They dealt with Karla and her siblings stood back helplessly. After a while Karla fell asleep and she woke up with Billie next to her.
"Bils..." Karla said, getting the girls attention who was reading through a pamphlet.
"Hey baby." Billie whispered, leaning in and kissing the girls forehead, "Your sisters had to leave so I came an hour ago." She smiled, "How are you feeling?"
Karla shrugged and rubbed her eyes, "I have a headache." She said, smiling weakly at Billie.
"What's wrong, angel?"
"I just miss how things were." Karla mumbled, "I'm just bored of this - of being sick and stuck in this hospital... and I know everyone wants to be here but I just feel so annoying and needy. I hate it."
"I know, but you have come so far!" Billie smiled, squeezing the girls hand, "It won't be like this forever. When you get out we can do anything you want."
Karla nodded sadly, "Can you just come into bed with me? I want you to hold me."
Billie grinned and quickly climbed in next to Karla, they had quickly gotten used to squeezing in to the single hospital bed. Billie held her arm out and Karla rested her head on the girls chest, breathing in the girls scent - incredibly grateful that she had her throughout all of this madness.
**
The day had finally come when Karla could be discharged. She had been in hospital for nearly two months and was leaving with, what felt like, millions of physiotherapy sessions booked in and medication in her mums bag.
She didn't feel like she'd be so anxious on the drive home but she couldn't stop looking around her to make sure no one was there. The people who attacked her that day were locked away and awaiting trial but that didn't seem to solve any of her anxieties.
Arriving back home, Kris was emotional to have her youngest back home - the house having felt empty for too long.
"How are you feeling?" Kris asked.
Karla slumped down on the couch, "Happy."
Kris smiled, "It's lovely to have you back, honey."
"I can smell home." Karla mumbled, "Clearly gone for way too long."
Kris nodded and sat down next to her daughter, "What do you want to do now?" She asked.
"Sleep." Karla mumbled, laying her head down on her mothers lap
Kris stroked her hair back across the girls forehead and watched as Karla slowly fell asleep. Her legs went numb under the weight of her daughter's head but she didn't mind - she'd rather have her legs numb for life if it meant Karla was finally home.
