"Easy, Boy," someone said in the barn when we were close, and Alec and I looked at each other. "You're safe. You're fine."

The horse whinnied in fear, and my frown deepened while I started to walk faster, and Alec followed.

"Easy, it's me, Blue. Easy. You are safe. No one is going to hurt you."

Again there was the sound of snorting and thumping hooves while the horse got away from them.

"Shit!" I heard another of my workers say where there was a loud thud that had us sprinting towards the group. "Get away from his hooves."

"Watch out! He's escaping!"

Thud! Clatter! Bang!

Sure enough, the stallion escaped from the group that was working with him and ran towards the direction that we were going in.

Pounding hooves hit the concrete before the sight of the blue roan came into view looking petrified and unaware of his surroundings than he did when we came in.

I silently cursed and moved to one side while Alec moved to the other side so that the horse could pass without us getting hurt. "Blue!" I exclaimed, shocked and surprised. "Whoa! Settle down! You're fine!"

Blue stopped at the sound of my voice and flicked his ear towards me. He reared and trumpet blared, striking out his hooves while he reared.

"Easy," I said again and started to walk slowly towards him, not knowing why he had decided to listen to me but grateful that he did so. "You're ok. No one is going to hurt you. I promise."

Blue snorted and bobbed his head. He whickered hesitantly and shook his head while he took a step back away from me.

"Easy," I said again softly and walked closer to him while I made kissing noises to him. "You are ok. I won't hurt you. I will never hurt you."

Again, Blue snorted again and flicked his ears toward me and then the others that started to come behind me.

The horse snorted and tossed his head before I could grab the lead rope and ran towards the doors again.

"Stop," I said and gestured for them to back off, keeping my gaze on Blue while I took a step toward him. "Let me handle this."

"Are you sure?" the doctor, Dr. Ren, asked. Worry filled her voice, and she looked between me and the horse. "I know him. I know that he won't like being chased by someone he doesn't know."

"You know him?" I asked and glanced at her from the corner of my eye, and she nodded in confirmation. "How?"

"I work for the Comte family as their vet too," she said. "He doesn't listen to anyone but Ella. No one can get close to him."

"He's done good with him so far," Alec said. "Back up an' let him get the horse. Go on, Daniel."

"I-" Dr. Ren sighed but nodded, interrupting herself while she cleared her throat. "Ok," she said and backed up while she watched us with pain in her eyes.

"You sure, Young Boss?" Richard asked with a raised eyebrow, and I held back an eye roll but scowled. "He's pretty wound up."

"I am," I said, letting my voice have a small bit of warning in it. "Now, back up."

"Of course, Sir," Richard said and nodded. He backed up again while I took a deep breath while I looked at Blue, praying that I wouldn't get hurt.

"Blue," I said again, "whoa."

The horse stopped at the door and turned around to look at me. His brown eyes were filled with fear while he looked at me, and I breathed a sigh of relief, happy that he decided to stop.

"Come here," I said and made a kissing noise. "It's ok. No one is going to hurt you. I promise."

Blue whickered but didn't walk towards me. He stayed where he was, breathing heavily while he stared at us.

"Come on," I said and took a step toward him. "It's ok. No one is going to hurt you," I repeated while I took another step toward him.

Blue whickered again before he bobbed his head. He snorted and shook out his mane before he slowly started to walk towards me, matching my pace. His ears were pricked towards me, and I could tell that he was interested in me, something that I was grateful for.

"Good, Boy," I soothed. "You are ok. No one will hurt you. I promise." I stopped when I was close to him and held out my hand, praying that he wanted to come over to me.

Blue whickered again and stopped in front of me. He breathed out before he nuzzled my hand.

"Good, Boy," I said again before I grabbed his lead rope and rubbed his neck being gentle. "You are ok. I won't hurt you. No one is going to hurt you."

Blue nuzzled my shoulder and whickered a little. He looked at the vet and flicked his ears back when she started to walk toward us. He snorted and shook his head before he took a step toward me.

"Easy," I said and grabbed the lead rope tighter. I turned towards him and grabbed his halter just a bit. "You are safe. Easy. She's not going to hurt you."

He snorted and shook his head, but he didn't move.

"Are you ok, Doc?" I asked, and she bit back a small breathless chuckle while she nodded.

"Yes," she said. "I am. Can you keep holding him while I check him out?"

"I can," I confirmed and nodded. "Have you worked with him for a long time?"

"Yes," she said and nodded. "He's a handful, but Ella has been able to handle him."

I nodded and stayed silent while I let go of his halter and started to rub his neck, and Blue slowly lowered his neck and closed his eyes.

"I'm glad that he is listening to you," she said softly, and I nodded in confirmation. She cleared her throat and shifted on her feet while she walked the rest of the way over to him, and Blue stayed still but flicked his tail.

"I am too." I cleared my throat and shifted just a little. "How old is he?"

"He's six-years-old," Dr. Ren replied before she cleared her throat, "and he's a gelding. He hasn't lived with the Contre all his life. Blue had been abused before he was placed there."

I paused and looked at her with wide eyes, and my heart skipped a beat. "What?" I asked, shocked. "What did you say?"

She frowned and blinked. "He's been abused before he was given to Ella?" she asked. "Is that wh-"

I shook my head, and she closed her mouth. "Before that," I said before I cleared my throat. "What did you say before that?"

Dr. Ren blinked and blinked again before she cleared her throat. "He's a gelding," she said softly. "Blue is a gelding. Why? What is it? What's wrong?"

Shit...

This was going to be fun...
