Xiang Chen walked slowly on the road, his small stature and short legs not allowing him to cover much ground. Instead, his feet were swollen and aching from the gravel and mud.

Though he had lost his mother at a young age and was mistreated by his stepmother and her son, he had at least been cared for by his grandparents. He had never experienced such hardship.

Xiang Chen held his breath, not wanting to spend the night in the wilderness. He sat down on the side of the road, planning to rest for a while before continuing his journey.

At that moment, he heard faint sounds coming from a distance. He paused, listening intently, confirming the presence of some kind of noise. He quickly crouched in the bushes and kept his eyes on the road.

A cart slowly approached, carrying two adults and two children, all of whom had the typical appearance of people from Hua Country. Their clothes, although somewhat worn and dusty, were in the style commonly worn by rural Hua Country folk.

Xiang Chen breathed a sigh of relief, relieved that he hadn't crossed into a different world. He hesitated in the bushes, wondering whether to come out and ask them for a ride. But how should he approach them? It would be strange for a young child to be alone by the roadside.

After some contemplation, Xiang Chen decided to take a chance. He dashed out, running a few steps after the cart. Before he could call out, the cart unexpectedly came to a halt.

Filled with excitement, Xiang Chen hurriedly caught up, his short legs working hard as he approached the cart, panting heavily.

Having been far away earlier, he couldn't discern the appearance of the people on the cart. The man and woman, both in their forties or fifties, had rough and untidy eyebrows and a somewhat fierce appearance. The woman, with a round and kind face, immediately hopped off the cart, exclaiming with concern, "Whose child is this? What are you doing here? Where are your parents?"

Xiang Chen heard the woman asking about his parents and was momentarily stunned. Do people still use that term to refer to their parents?

His mind raced, and his eyes quickly scanned the bare cart's board. He put on a childish voice and said, "My dad is in the city, and my mom took me to find him. She fell asleep on the way, and I fell off."

As he heard his own childish voice, Xiang Chen couldn't help but make a pouty face, but he still had to speak: "Auntie, can you take me to find my mom? My mom said my dad went to see the uncle in the uniform, and they must be waiting for me at the uncle's house."

"The uncle in uniform?" The woman and the man exchanged a glance, smiling as they picked Xiang Chen up and placed him on the cart. "Auntie knows who you're talking about. They live in a big house, wear white clothes, and hats, right?"

White clothes? Xiang Chen was momentarily stunned. Do policemen wear white clothes? He seemed to have seen it somewhere that there was a period in Hua Country when police uniforms were white, but he couldn't recall exactly when.

Seeing him not saying anything, the woman didn't pursue it further and continued, "Your mom is so careless, she doesn't even know when her child falls off. Fortunately, we met you. Few people take this road, and there are wolves at night. You're such a big kid, so tender. Wolves love that."

Xiang Chen shuddered in fear and quickly leaned inward. He had heard from his grandmother that the pigs in their house were taken away by wolves. If such big pigs could be taken away, what chance did he stand with his weight?
