Chapter 231: Little Thief...Chen Youcai opened the box.
"What's wrong? What did Qinqin say? Did something happen?" Chen Xiaohua had just hung up the phone, and Xiang Chen approached cautiously, concerned. Chen Xiaohua's face looked extremely grim, causing Xiang Chen to worry.
Chen Xiaohua glanced at Xiang Chen with guilt in her eyes, then proceeded to recount what Qinqin had told her over the phone.
After the incident where Chen Fang confronted Zhao Qinqin, there had been no further developments. While Zhao Qinqin was worried, she was reassured by Grandma Zhao's presence and wasn't too scared. After all, Cai Zhen had come to cause trouble before and had been driven away. It was no different this time.
Despite needing to be cautious of the Chen family, life had to go on as usual. The Zhao family continued with their daily routines, going to work and school as usual.
No one expected Chen Youcai and Cai Zhen to have the audacity to attempt breaking in and picking locks.
Due to an injury her father had sustained earlier in his career, Zhao Qinqin's father had retired early and passed his job to his daughter when she came of age. Zhao Qinqin's mother was a homemaker, caring for the elderly and children at home. Additionally, with Grandma Zhao around, there were usually three people at home.
It just so happened that day, that Zhao Qinqin's mother received news from their hometown that her mother was ill. Qinqin's father accompanied his wife back to her parents' home, leaving only Zhao Granny at home.
Chen Youcai had been observing the Zhao family for two days, waiting for an opportunity like this. He hurried home to find Cai Zhen, who promptly followed him.
While the residential area appeared lively, most people were either at work or school in the morning. Only the elderly were left at home, doing needlework or tidying up. Cai Zhen followed Chen Youcai over, still worrying about how to get rid of Grandma Zhao. Coincidentally, a neighbor called out to Grandma Zhao at the entrance, asking for her help to look at some shoes. Grandma Zhao casually closed the door and followed her out.
Cai Zhen and Chen Youcai were overjoyed, feeling as if the heavens had finally opened their eyes, helping them reclaim their stolen wealth.
They tiptoed into the residential area, where an elderly lady sat at the entrance washing vegetables. Her eyesight was poor due to her age, and she mistook them for Qinqin's parents, greeting them cheerfully, "Zhuang, why have you returned so early?"
Chen Youcai was feeling triumphant and had no fear of the toothless old lady. He glared at her menacingly and snapped, "None of your business, old hag..."
Cai Zhen, however, felt a bit guilty and mumbled a few vague responses. She nudged Chen Youcai to avoid stirring up trouble unnecessarily. Ignoring the bewildered old lady, they headed straight to the Zhao family's house.
Grandma Zhao had gone to the neighboring courtyard for a stroll, where there were still elderly neighbors present. Hence, she had only casually closed the door without locking it, just securing the latch.
Chen Youcai tinkered with the latch and realized that his master key was useless. He smirked triumphantly at Cai Zhen, feeling like everything was going his way today, and he was on the brink of making a fortune.
The layout of the houses in the residential area was similar for each family. With the Zhao family being larger and receiving compensation from the factory due to Qinqin's father's work injury, their house was about thirty square meters larger than Chen's, which had two small rooms.
