Chapter 114: Awarding Prizes...This is the special reward for the first place.

The new semester began, and Xiang Chen once again found himself busy.

During the summer vacation, the Dahe Village Primary School underwent expansion, adding two more classrooms and hiring two additional teachers. One was Lin Jiayan, and the other was Tu Hai, a male educated youth who ranked just behind Lin Jiayan and Yuan Wei in the previous exam.

The expansion of the village school was due to the increase in students. This semester, not only did Dahe Village have a new batch of students, but there were also over twenty children from neighboring villages whose parents brought them over, specifically seeking out Chen Youshan and Xu Hengzhou, the acting school principals, to enroll their children in Dahe Village Primary School.

What surprised Chen Youshan was that several parents from the neighboring San Dui Village also brought their children to enroll in school. Chen Guomin, the leader of San Dui Village, had approached Chen Youshan several times, vaguely hinting at the idea of repairing the bridge between the two villages. Chen Youshan pretended not to understand and let him continue dropping hints.

After the school started, Dahe Village Primary School not only had a first-grade class but also divided the new students into two classes, each led by one of the new teachers.

Jiang Miao and Yuan Wei continued to work together, teaching the students who progressed more slowly in the second-grade class while also handling a first-grade class to assist their new colleagues. Xiang Chen and Xu Hengzhou were responsible for catching up with the curriculum, striving to help the fast-paced students complete their primary education ahead of schedule.

On the day of the school opening, a simple opening ceremony was held in the schoolyard, where Chen Youshan had someone build a podium out of stones. This was where any speeches would be delivered.

As the acting principal, Xu Hengzhou stood on the stone podium and presided over the first opening ceremony. He wasn't accustomed to long-winded speeches, and besides, some of what he wanted to say might not be understood by the children below. He succinctly explained some of the school's rules and regulations before waving to the crowd below and calling Xiang Chen up with a cardboard box.

In front of the entire school, as well as the villagers who came to watch, Xiang Chen opened the cardboard box to reveal bundles of pencils and stacks of new workbooks, including some thick notebooks usually used by adults.

"As I promised before, any student who achieved a score above the average of the commune primary school in the exam can receive a reward. Now, I am here to fulfill that promise," Xu Hengzhou announced loudly.

The students who had already advanced to the second grade couldn't help but shout out in excitement. Initially, Xu Hengzhou had indeed made that promise. However, when the results came out, they had performed exceptionally well, with only about ten students falling short. As a result, nearly a hundred students were eligible for rewards.

Even if a pencil only cost two cents, with so many students, it amounted to two dollars. As a teacher, Xu Hengzhou earned only eight dollars a month without counting food, which already accounted for a quarter of it.

So, later on, he didn't bring up the matter again, and the villagers also felt it was reasonable. The fact that the children performed well in exams was already commendable enough for the teachers; how could they expect them to shell out so much money?
