On winter mornings, every time waking up was like a battle with the bed and blankets, one clinging on for dear life while the other, with wavering resolve, was ready to surrender at any moment.

Xiang Chen brushed his hand away, burying his face in the covers, grumbling, "I don't want to eat. Skipping one meal won't hurt."
"No, you have to get up," Xu Hengzhou persisted. He could tolerate Xiang Chen's laziness, but he couldn't let him skip breakfast.
"If you hadn't stayed up so late last night, would I be so sleep-deprived?" Xiang Chen buried his head further into the blankets, gripping the corners with his feet and hands, determined to resist Xu Hengzhou's insistence.
Xu Hengzhou sighed, caught in a stalemate, when a knock on the door interrupted them, accompanied by someone shouting, "Teacher Xu, Principal Xu! Come out quickly, there's good news!"
Xu Hengzhou's eyes lit up with a hint of joy, momentarily forgetting about Xiang Chen cocooned in bed, as he hurried to open the door.
Walking into the courtyard, the voices from outside became clearer, and Xu Hengzhou could already make out Chen Jianguo's voice.
Xu Hengzhou hurried to the door and unlocked the courtyard gate, which he had locked before going to bed last night. At the door, Chen Jianguo's face was beaming with joy, and as soon as he saw Xu Hengzhou, he exclaimed loudly, "Principal Xu, great news! You passed!"
Xu Hengzhou quickly ushered him in. Chen Jianguo was there to share the good news, so formalities were set aside. Stepping into the courtyard, he looked around and said, "Where's Teacher Xu? He passed too. You brothers are something, capable people are indeed different."
In front of outsiders, they had to save some face for Xiang Chen. Xu Hengzhou made up an excuse, "He accidentally splashed water on his clothes while fetching water this morning. He's changing inside and will be out soon."

Chen Jianguo furrowed his brows and thought for a moment, awkwardly shrugging, "I didn't pay attention. My dad brought back the news from the commune, and I rushed over to share the good news with you. I forgot which school you got accepted to."
