Chapter 153: Going to the Capital... [VIP] Crossing Over Half the Country

On winter mornings, every time waking up was like a battle with the bed and blankets, one clinging on for dear life while the other, with wavering resolve, was ready to surrender at any moment.

Tucked snugly in his warm quilt, Xiang Chen staged a little drama for himself, "You mischievous little sprite, let go of me! I have to get up early today!"

He rolled around in bed as if engaged in a struggle, finally managing to reach out and grab his coat hanging on the chair by the bed. But as soon as his hand ventured into the cold air, he quickly withdrew it back under the covers.

"It's too cold. Maybe I'll just sleep a bit longer. I can always get up earlier tomorrow," Xiang Chen mentally prepared himself for a few more moments of sleep, snuggling back into his pillow.

"Get up, no more sleeping," Xu Hengzhou pushed the door open and walked in, pinching Xiang Chen's nose. "Eat breakfast first before going back to sleep."

Xiang Chen brushed his hand away, burying his face in the covers, grumbling, "I don't want to eat. Skipping one meal won't hurt."

"No, you have to get up," Xu Hengzhou persisted. He could tolerate Xiang Chen's laziness, but he couldn't let him skip breakfast.

"If you hadn't stayed up so late last night, would I be so sleep-deprived?" Xiang Chen buried his head further into the blankets, gripping the corners with his feet and hands, determined to resist Xu Hengzhou's insistence.

Xu Hengzhou sighed, caught in a stalemate, when a knock on the door interrupted them, accompanied by someone shouting, "Teacher Xu, Principal Xu! Come out quickly, there's good news!"

Xu Hengzhou's eyes lit up with a hint of joy, momentarily forgetting about Xiang Chen cocooned in bed, as he hurried to open the door.

Walking into the courtyard, the voices from outside became clearer, and Xu Hengzhou could already make out Chen Jianguo's voice.

Xu Hengzhou hurried to the door and unlocked the courtyard gate, which he had locked before going to bed last night. At the door, Chen Jianguo's face was beaming with joy, and as soon as he saw Xu Hengzhou, he exclaimed loudly, "Principal Xu, great news! You passed!"

Xu Hengzhou quickly ushered him in. Chen Jianguo was there to share the good news, so formalities were set aside. Stepping into the courtyard, he looked around and said, "Where's Teacher Xu? He passed too. You brothers are something, capable people are indeed different."

In front of outsiders, they had to save some face for Xiang Chen. Xu Hengzhou made up an excuse, "He accidentally splashed water on his clothes while fetching water this morning. He's changing inside and will be out soon."

The rural mud-brick houses weren't soundproof, and speaking so loudly in the courtyard, Xiang Chen must have heard.

Sure enough, shortly after, Xiang Chen emerged from the house, neatly dressed, with no trace of sleepiness on his face. It seemed like he had indeed changed his clothes and not just gotten out of bed.

"Squad leader, did I pass too?" Xiang Chen went straight to Chen Jianguo as soon as he came out, excitement written all over his face. "Where did I get accepted?"

Chen Jianguo furrowed his brows and thought for a moment, awkwardly shrugging, "I didn't pay attention. My dad brought back the news from the commune, and I rushed over to share the good news with you. I forgot which school you got accepted to."
