CHAPTER 1

A TWIST IN ROME

"Mom please let me go on the trip! I've always wanted to go there and here when I finally get the opportunity to go you're not letting me. Its just not fair!" I puffed my cheeks and mustered up the best innocent look I could come up with.

I'm Denise Woods, a seventeen year old teenager, an only child and a social outcast with dreams of travelling around the world and here I was begging my mom to let her ONLY child fulfill her dreams by letting her go on her high school trip to Italy.

You would be thinking that usually the dads in the family are the ones the teenagers take permissions from but not in my home. My dad usually stayed away from home because of his tough job. He was a businessman who had to travel a lot so my mother took care of everything.

My mom continued to wash the dishes not taking her gaze off the dishes and stayed silent for a while. I watched her big, dark brown eyes trying to read what she was thinking and finally she spoke.

"When is the trip leaving? And which hotel will you guys be staying at? I want all the details from what time you all would be leaving to what time you will be coming back", she spoke in her stern voice.

She kept the stern look on her face but I knew she had given in and I had a huge grin on my face. I hugged, thanking her and filled her in with all the details.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I dragged my black, heavy suitcase out the front door with keys in my right hand and cell phone in my left. It was 7:40 A.m and we had only 20 minutes left to reach the airport in time. I knew I was late, I mentally cursed myself for staying up all night and searching for the places we would see in Italy because as soon as the sun came up, I was out like a light and overslept.
Mom was honking the car horn impatiently. I hurriedly locked the front door and dragged my suitcase towards our old, white, Chevy. My mom popped open the trunk and I dropped the luggage, slammed it shut and sunk in the backseat.
As my mom drove I doubled checked all the stuff in my mind. It was a habit I had developed over the years. Today was a big day for me and everything had to be perfect. I couldn't wait to explore Italy, the country I had always dreamed of going to.
"Do you have everything with you? Your charger? Phone? IPad? Toothbrush?"
My mom asked with a worried expression looking at me through the rear view mirror.
"Yes mom don't worry I have everything and I will be fine", I re-assured her for the fourth time since morning. "Its only a trip for one week and besides I'll have my class fellows to accompany me and a lot of teachers including our principal looking after us. Just calm down and focus on the road or we'll be late for the flight"
The rest of the ride went in silence and every now and then I would glance at my wrist watch, anxiety building up in me as every minute passed by. When we arrived I had only 5 minutes left to catch the plane before it left shattering my dream. I jogged to the terminal with mom trying to catch up behind me and barely made it. My class fellows were all standing at the boarding gate with their boarding passes. I scanned the group of students to spot familiar faces. I scrunched up my nose when I saw my very own version of "Mean Girls" standing there too.
This was going to be a long flight. I muttered under my breath.
My group started moving in order to board, I hugged my mom goodbye.
Once I was inside the plane I checked my seat number and secretly prayed that I wouldn't be stuck with some obnoxious passenger. I laughed at that thought and started searching.
 I found my seat and was glad to see the seat next to it empty. I buckled myself and started searching for my headphones in my bag. After untangling them for 5 minutes I plugged them into my phone, laid back in my seat, closed my eyes and relaxed.
I was busy humming the end of the song when someone tapped my shoulder. I jumped in my seat at the touch and gasped at who was sitting right beside me.
