IF THERE WAS ONE THING MALACHAI HAD GOTTEN USED TO IT'S being the black sheep of his family. He grew up being the black sheep and the silent family disappointment.

Up until he was twenty-two. On some random fateful day with his human best friend his powers had finally come years later. It was a pretty violent explosion, and his friend was lucky she didn't get caught in the crossfire but the man attacking them did.

After that his family just seemed to forget all about them ostracizing him and disliking his general presence. Suddenly he was welcomed back in.

Like most neglected children Malachai had complicated feelings on that. His mom had been the only decent one and that was saying a lot.

The only person he truly had gotten along with and didn't treat him differently was his human best friend, Dara.

She never cared about his lack of powers and to his relief she didn't seem terrified of them when he gained them. Of course, Malachai's parents wanted him to cut contact with the only human left in his life. To go full witch-warlock and even transfer to the witch college his older siblings attend.

That and Dara's older brother is a menace to his family. A witch himself. The situation of different dads had Dara born human.

But he couldn't just tell Dara to go fuck herself much less ditch her. So, like every other normal rebellious child here he was on Halloween with the woman his parents disapproved of.

Dara wore a red cupid costume. She had cupid tights on, a corset in red that was cupid inspired and then a red mini skirt followed up by red lace up boots and then heart shaped wings.

"That party was lame." Dara murmured.

Malachai looked over at Dara who was staring down at her hands.

"It could've been worse. I mean frat parties are always a hit or miss if you know what I mean." I told her.

"It just sucks that Ariss and May were busy. I was hoping they'd be here." Dara murmured.

"They'll be a once every other year type of people. They have lenient parents but since they came with us last year they had to do family stuff this year."

Malachai wasn't sure if Dara knew that Ariss and May were also witches.

In his defense the two were a completely different branch of witch. They were voodoo practicing witches and unlike his family their family weren't practitioners of baneful magick.

He had met Ariss's parents, and they were very down to earth open-minded people. At times Malachai wished he had Ariss's parents instead of his own. They didn't care about his lack of power and neither did they have unsavory views on humans.

Malachai figured that Ariss and May would tell Dara if they wanted her to know.

"Do you want to go look for another party to crash?" Malachai asked.

"I'm down for that."

Dara lifted herself off the stone wall and the two of them went on their way.

"How are things with your family?" Dara asked.

She had linked her arm with his and was walking very close to him. He didn't mind though. It was reassuring having someone that close to him.

"Complicated. It's like they're trying to forget about how much they ignored me growing up because now I can do magick like them." Malachai told her.
