The first hint of how my world was going to change came a year ago when I transfer to this school and met Didier. However, the first clue I had actually happen two days ago. Maybe a couple of years later, I'll look back in on this situation and laugh or I may even think of all the different things I should or should not have said. In any event, we cannot change the past.
That morning when I woke up was just like any other morning. There was no hint that the event of yesterday even happen. My dad was gone and there was no brother to be found. There was a compression from the extra pillow on my bed, but when I touched it, there was no warmth to be found. That didn't mean that I slept with somebody. It could have been my head on it during the night. I convince myself of that and even managed to convince myself that yesterday event was all but a very vivid dream. I have been having them lately and they seem more and more real every night.
By the time I reached school, I was one hundred percent sure that me conjuring up a brother was a total dream. First and second period passed in a blur. I did not see a wink of my tormentors which basically included Didier and Jessica's group.
Well, okay. So I was starting to like Didier a little bit. Fine, a lot. I was starting to like Didier a lot more than when I first met him. There I admit it to myself.
I can be honest with myself too. Anyway, he wasn't in class today and I found myself wondering about his whereabouts. And this thought had kept me distracted through half of the day. It was lunchtime before I realize and knowing that Didier was not going to be there, I was a bit disappointed.
So it was with a bit of a shock that when I entered the cafeteria I set eyes on someone who should not have been there.
"So, how are you enjoying the ambiance so far Dmitry?" a slutty yet familiar voice cut through my thoughts. Now why am I acting surprise?
Jessica. Of course. She wouldn't be Jessica if she didn't at least tried to nail the new guy. Which just happen to be my brother. Wonder how she was going to take that little bit of news.
I was about to step towards them when I noticed Calia heading towards me. I waited for her to catch up before cocking my head toward Jessica and her gang.
"Should we crash her party?"
"By all mean." Calia gave me a hip bump. Like two Madonnas, we walked over to their tables. My hair was down and I felt sexy. With Calia walking next to me, I felt all the power of world was just rejoicing in our birth. We didn't get far, when I heard Jessica said, "So, we saw you walking in with that girl. Please tell me she didn't try to blackmail you?" hearing that, I stop. I frowned, I didn't walked in with Dmitry.
It was a little strange that I was able to hear her clearly as if she were standing right next to me instead of a couple of feet ahead of me in a cafeteria full of chatter. But I didn't have time to analyze that little issue. It could wait for later, however, what Jessica had to said, couldn't. I had to hear this.
"What do you mean?" Dmitry asked.
"Well, since you're new, you probably don't know, but Calantha has a history of blackmailing. Mostly boys if you know what I mean. In fact, not too long ago, she started hanging out with this guy named Didier. Well, he was my boyfriend up until that moment. I mean, when I saw them together, I thought he was cheating on me, right? So, I sort of overreacted and broke up with him. It wasn't until later that I found out that she was blackmailing him. A few questions here and there and I was able to learned that Didier wasn't the only that she was blackmailing."
"Well, the way I see it is she wouldn't have needed to blackmail him if he didn't have something to be blackmail about."
"You don't get it," Jessica replied, clearly annoyed. "It doesn't matter if you had something to be blackmailed about. Everyone has some secret they want to keep to themselves, but we don't all go around invading other's privacy just to learn those secret and to later blackmailed them with it."
Pretending I hadn't been watching them since I walked in the cafeteria, Calia and I walked toward them.
"Um, what are you doing here?" I asked. All the occupant of the table turns toward me with shock expression. All, except one. His expression was one of pleasure. Boy, did that guy had a smile or what? It could power up a whole continent it was that strong.
Someone snapped their fingers in front of my eyes and I blink. For the first time I realized I was staring. I turn and starred into the eyes of Jessica and grimaced. I'd forgotten she was there.
"Hey," he said, smiling. A though occurred to me and I smiled mischievously.
"I woke up this morning and you were gone, I thought it was all a dream." I felt more than heard Jessica's gasp as well as those of the occupants of the table. This was Jessica's turf and if she wanted to humiliate me in front of her friends, I had no problem in turning the table on her. Let her try.
"Well, you were sleeping so soundly and you looked like an angel, I didn't want to disturbed your dreams." Even though I knew that he was just playing along with me, I still felt the blush stole up my face. The way he lower his voice in an intimate tone as though we were the only two persons in the cafeteria left no doubt what any observers would make of that sentence. Lovers, would have been their first thought and my blushing was not helping the situation. Next to me, Calia giggle.
"Wow, Calantha, you work pretty fast." Jessica addressed me.
"Excuse me?" I was still blushing.
"Well," she paused before looking around the room, seeming to meet the eyes of as much people as possible. "From the way you were throwing yourself at Didier this past few months, we all thought you were...you know, dating."
"Did you, now?" I finally lifted my head to look her squarely in the eyes. Her eyes widen with shock surprise.
"Uh, freaky. What's wrong with your eyes?"
"Poor Jessica. Always getting jealous of what she doesn't have."
"Are you kidding me?" she sneered at me. "What reasons could I possibly have for getting jealous of a person like you?"
"And what kind of person is she?" Dmitry asked her in a neutral voice. Jessica, too wrapped up in herself, responded,
"A slut."
Even Calia gasped.
A short silence ensure after that announcement. Everyone witness the look of disgust on Dmitry's face as he extricated himself from Jessica's hand. With a melting smile, he looked down his nose at her. "Excuse me sweetheart."
