Before we get started, a special thank you goes to Leigh for helping me "trim" this shaggy chapter to perfection. Follow the name link above to give her a nice little follow. She supplies Wattpad with some lovely literature.
Now, in honor of No-Shave November...
... today's chapter is dedicated to homophones. Like your armpit hair this time of the month, the English language's list of homophones is long and tangly. It also grows longer by the month—like certain other things in November (It must be the weather). The ones we are looking at today are common causes for error, but the differences between them are actually quite obvious once you know what you're looking for.
For those of you unfamiliar with the term, homophone simply refers to words that sound alike, as you'll see in just a second.
The point of this chapter is to list commonly misused homophones, many of which will be gone over in more detail in later chapters. This list is by no means even close to complete, and if there are more hirsute homophones that you would like to see on this list, comment below. I'm more than happy to add to my incomplete list. If you see any that you have questions about, do ask in the comments. You do not have to shave them for later.
Farther and Further
Whole and Hole
There, They're, and Their
Your and You're
Affect and Effect
Add and Ad
Wonder and Wander
Hall and Haul
Than and Then
Too, Two, and To
For and Four
And the famous Hair and Hare, of course
There are also quite a few more, such as Hall/Haul, Mail/Male, but these are perhaps more obvious, so we'll skip them for the sake of keeping this chapter short, sweet, and a tad bit bushy.
That's all for now. I don't wish to overwhelm anyone. A lot of these just take a bit of memorization to master. As a good friend once said, "Once you know what you're looking for, you won't have to check with a fine-tooth comb." - LVann26
