Tessa was playing around with Mina, and was just about to sing her one of Will's Welsh lullabies, when Mina decided to go to sleep. Tessa sang it anyway.

Kit was out with some of his school friends, and Jem had run to get more groceries. So she and Mina were the only ones home.
After she tucked Mina in her crib, she went to the library to read for some time. Eventually, she sighed, put down the book, and went to dust the house a bit.

She went to all of their rooms, Kit's excluded. Even though Kit had said that it was fine for them to be in his room, Jem and Tessa preferred to stay out of it, and give him his personal space.

But Kit had seemed a bit out of character lately, ever since that curious mail had come for him. Tessa had wondered about it for some time, but then had let it be. But he had been acting off since it came. It had been a few months, but Kit had been very jittery and anxious every time anyone brought it up. So they all forgot about it. Except for Kit. He had withdrawn, stayed in his room for hours, talked to them less, those sort of things. Tessa was worried about him.

She dropped the duster on the floor and creaked open Kit's door slowly. His room was a mess, clothes and books spread on the floor, his bed was littered with junk, which had been pushed to the side to create a small place for him to sleep. Tessa furrowed her brow in worry.
What is he going through, and why it it affecting him this badly?

His desk was comparatively neater. All his half-chewed stationary was in a worn out paper cup on the corner, and some books were stacked to the side. There were two letters, neatly placed on his desk, both having today's date. The first one was a bit crushed, so Tessa assumed that he had re-written it on the second one, as they both had the same postal code. She didn't look at the address or the name, though, as she didn't want to invade his privacy.

He must have forgotten to send them. Tessa thought to herself.

She made up her mind and starting cleaning his room, careful not to look at anything that he might not want her looking at. She stacked all the clothes after folding them, in one corner of the room, and threw out the junk after carefully making sure that they were junk, and not anything else.

Just as she had finished up everything, she heard the doorbell ring and opened the door to Jem.
