Ty woke up to find Irene curled up in his blankets and Livvy fiddling with her heron necklace, (correction: Kit's heron necklace) since it was the only thing she could touch. He coughed and she looked up.
"Oh, you're awake," Livvy whispered, so as to not wake the large cat.
"Yes, and I'm late to class," Ty replied, checking his watch, which he wore everywhere.
He rushed to get freshened up while Livvy watched him fondly. When he was done, he scratched Irene behind the ears, grabbed his "research binder", gave a flying kiss to Livvy, and made his way to class.
It was a long day in the scholomance, and while he usually enjoyed trianing and studied, there was just something wrong today.
His days were exciting, and after school had ended every Tuesday, he got letters from home and friends. He loved reading about what tavvy had got up to this time, what new film Dru had watched, which place Emma and Julian were headed to now, how much Aline hated writing updates to him, and how she hated that Helen was too busy to do it. Occasionally, he would even get letters from Tessa and Jem, though they usually tended to write to emma.
But after one particular letter he had sent, he had always hoped for one envelope, one letter, one message from one person. But they would never respond. But how wonderous it would be, to walk into his dorm room, wave to Livvy, have a seat at the desk with the bundle of letters, have Irene jump onto his lap, and for him to catch sight of one letter, one letter with one name scribbled on the 'to' line. But that would never happen. It was impossible.
And on this particular day he made his way to his dorm room, utterly exhausted, ready and curious of what his family was doing this week. And he went into his room, waved to his sister and took a seat at his desk, gushing with yet-to-be-opened letters. His lynx jumped onto his lap, waiting to be stroked and then he noticed his sister looking pale, even for a ghost.
"Livvy?" He asked her. "Is everything alright?"
"Maybe-" she stuttered, "maybe you should look at your envelopes, ty."Confused, he looked at the pile of them on his desk.
And there it was, and nothing could prepare him for this moment, because he had never expected it. And to his delight and his panic, there it was one name scribbled on the envelope, two actually, but he didn't want to consider his own. One name that had turned his entire life upside down.
