Kit had just started to his house when he got a message from Jem asking him when he would get home. He replied: otw

Jem said: what?

Kit shook his head and typed out: it means on the way. I'll be home in just a few minutes.

Jem reacted to the message with a "👍"

"So he knows how to do that but not what otw means." Kit whispered with amusement.

Kit walked the familiar path back home, and still marveled at how beautiful Devon was. Soon he reached the foot path to Jem and Tessa's mansion, which Kit still did not know how they acquired.

He heard faint chatter coming from inside and threw open the door. He found Tessa and Jem seated at the dining table, Mina in her high chair.

"Hey," he said.
Jem smiled at him and Tessa whispered a hello. Mina hated loud noises.

Tessa said, "I've got a surprise for you upstairs."

Kit smiled at her. "I've got to go check it out, then."

He made his way up the stairs and to his room. Tessa must have gotten a heart attack looking at this room of this is where the surprise it. He thought to himself, just before he threw open the door.

Kit stayed rooted to the spot, and blinked thrice before he realised that what he was seeing was real.

His heart melted. This was the surprise, no doubt. Tessa was so nice to him, so motherly, to a boy she had not even known that long. He'd never been loved like this, the way that Tessa and Jem did, wholeheartedly, from the very beginning.

He put a hand to his face and realised there was a tear on it. So this was what it felt like, having actual parents. He was surprised by them every single day.

He breathed in heavily, and went to his room's attached washroom to splash his face with some water. Once he had dried off, he went back downstair and gave Tessa a big hug from behind whilst she was still seated, his hands wrapping round her neck and the chair. Tessa laughed and put a hand on his arm, still smiling.

"You didn't have to do all that, you know."

"But, oh, I just did." She replied, "no go ahead, take a seat and eat your dinner."

He whispered a greeting to Mina before he dug into his food. He hadn't realised just how hungry he was.

About halfway through the meal, Tessa hummed like she had just recollected something.

"Oh, and Kit. I sent that letter on your desk, the one which you forgot to post."

Kit sat up straight.

"What?!"
