The days flew by as we prepped for the event—or mission. I was a mess of nerves, my mind churning with a mix of emotions. So many "what ifs" were swirling around in my head. Honestly, I didn't want to get tangled up in this mess again. If I'm not, what would happen to us? I just wanted my life back to normal, to go home. I missed my mom.
"Athena, here's your dress," Sergeant Candy said, handing me an elegant, long gown that I'd be wearing for the mission.
I took the dress and slipped it on. Sergeant Candy gave me a compliment, and I managed a weak smile. It was a beautiful dress, pero hindi ko masyadong maappreciate itong dress dahil natatakot talaga ako. This wasn't a game where you could just restart if you lost. This was real, and if we failed, it was over for all of us.
"You look gorgeous, kid," Sergeant Candy said, her eyes crinkling at the corners.
"Thank you, Sergeant Candy," I replied, trying to sound confident.
As I was dabbing a bit of lipstick on my lips, both Sergeant Candy and I turned to the door when we heard a knock. Sharpay walked in.
"Wow, you clean up nice, Athena. I mean, your dress is pretty," Sharpay said, her eyes wide.
"I think I'm going to throw up or pass out soon, Sharpay," I said, anxiety gnawing at my stomach.
Sharpay gently caressed my cheek, her touch calming. She moved closer, her eyes searching mine. "Don't be so nervous. I won't let anything happen to you, okay? Here's your earpiece," she said, handed me the earpiece.
Sharpay handed me the earpiece and kissed my cheek. I managed a small smile and hugged her back. It was a strange comfort, but I was getting used to this kind of closeness with her.
"There's a tracker in there, so don't worry. We can find you no matter where you are." she said, her voice reassuring.
"But I'm just not cut out for this, Sharpay." I said, my voice barely a whisper.
"I'm not so sure about that Athena, may tiwala ako sayo at alam ko na kaya mo. Ikaw ang taong nakilala ko na magaling sa strategies kaya nga noong una kitang nakilala sa online game sobrang humanga talaga ako sayo.. isipin mo na nasa virtual realm lang tayo at ito ang mission natin." Pangpalakas loob na saad nya.
Napatikhim ako at tinitigan si Sharpay sa mga mata nya. Siguro kung hindi si Sharpay ang kasama ko sa mission na ito baka wala na ako ngayon. Baka nasa kulungan na ako. Kelangan ko sya ngayon dahil sa kanya nagagawa ko ang mga imposibleng bagay.
"Athena, may sasabihin pala ako sayo. Narinig ko kasi yung usapan ni Sergeant Candy at Agent Moonraker Jade Montemayor."
"Ano yun Sharpay?"
Hinawakan ni Sharpay ang kamay ko saka nya ako hinila sa gilid ng bed at pinaupo.
