"What's cookin', good lookin'?"

Hero shuddered and turned around quickly to see Mari, smiling. She waved and he stepped back, breaths shaky and heaving.

"M-Mari...but...but you..."

She closed her eyes with a kind smile and tilted her head.

"I never died. Nobody saw me die, yes? Because I never did. What happened, was...horrifying, yes, but I survived. Luckily. And even though it was hard, all I--"

She was cut off when Sunny hugged her, making her stop and blink curiously. Then, she chuckled and hugged back.

"Oh! Well...Hi, Sunny."

Sunny let out a muffled noise against her stomach, before the others went around her and surrounded her in a hug filled with laughter, happy cries, and smiles.

The six now sat around a small fire, talking happily and eating (partially stale) granola bars.

"Then Aubs just kinda...punched me?"

"You deserved it, dumbass."

They erupted in laughter as Kel shrugged and took a bite of his bar. Then, Hero took his arm off Mari and gasped.

"Wait! Mari! Could you tell us what happened? Like, how you got here?"

Mari looked surprised before she nodded and looked down at her hands.

"Right, uhm...well..."

---flashback---

Mari ran as quickly as she could, as growling came from behind her. She panted roughly and closed her eyes tight. Then, as she neared the edge of the roof, she gasped and stopped abruptly. She looked over the edge before turning around, facing the horrendous crowd of undead that stared back, their eyes white and hungry. She took deep breaths and looked over the edge again, before she closed her eyes tight again. Then, as she inhaled sharply, she leaped off, diving down.

Time slowed.

Sound muted.

Until she hit the ground.

She thought she was dead, feeling a pool of some sort of liquid around her and nothing but cold, as her ears rang. She sat up and rubbed her head, looking down to see a black, pink, green, and other colored liquid around her. She then stood up and hit her legs and sides a few times, checking for injuries. Nothing. Not even a scrape or bruise. She took a deep breath before running further, eventually finding an abandoned bakery, hiding behind the counter to collect her bearings.

"So...then I just kinda walked around campus...and saw you guys."

Hero nodded along as he ate quietly, before looking over at the others. Basil was asleep, as well as Aubrey, and Kel and Sunny were whispering to each other. The brunette boy perked up and smiled at his brother before returning to whispering with Sunny. Hero found this a bit suspicious, but he pushed it away. Then, he smiled at Mari, who leaned on him and breathed quietly and slowly, her eyes closed. Hero smiled again before kissing her forehead and then holding her.

----------

He woke up the next day and looked around, eventually landing on Kel, Sunny, and Aubrey putting materials away (Kel and Aubrey arguing quite a bit). Mari and Basil were talking as they sat with their backs against a bus, Basil most likely telling Mari about their "gnome battle". Hero stood up and walked over to the few, Kel smiling as he saw his brother. He had his jacket tied around his waist and smiled, standing up fully and putting his hands on his hips.

"Buenos dias, hermano!"

Hero chuckled and said the same back. Aubrey sighed and looked over.

"Hey, Hero. Your brother keeps screwing things up."

Kel scoffed and put his hand on his chest, looking at Aubrey.

"Excuse me, I'm just trying to help!"

"Sometimes people don't need help."

"Well you do!"

"I don't!"

They continued bickering like nine-year olds as Sunny shrugged at Hero and continued packing things away. Hero laughed and was about to turn around when he felt Mari jump onto his back. Not knowing who, he yelped and immediately went to grab his gun, as Mari put her hand over his to stop him.

"Hey. Jumpy. It's me."

He sighed and nodded with a smile.

"Right. Hey."

Mari smiled and giggled softly, before she flinched.

"Mari, you okay?"

She nodded and flinched again. Less of a flinch, more of a twitch. Hero backed up cautiously, as she smiled and then ran to hide herself. Everyone watched, silent, before Kel spoke softly.

"Is this what girls are like on their period?"

Aubrey hit him and he flinched with a small, "ow!"

-------

The five were waking again, Mari trailing behind them as they were quiet. Hero and Kel walked in front of them, guns loaded and pointed down, fingers on triggers. They looked at each other and shared looks and nods, before they separated a bit. Kel then turned to Hero and whispered.

"Why are our guards up? We haven't even been here before..."

"Exactly. Uncharted land. We don't know what's here, Musks...Gnomes...Zombies..."

Kel rolled his eyes, "Musks would've been spotted by now and we can hear zombies. And Gnomes just pick fights."

"What if it's another species?"

Kel rolled his eyes again and they continued walking, until Kel stood upright and twirled his handgun carelessly.

"Hermano, there's nothing...um...Hermano?"

The group stopped as they realized Hero was no longer in the group. Kel looked around, getting panicked. They finally spotted Hero, hunched over a bush, doing whatever. Kel sighed with a smile and walked over, but the rest of the group stayed back. Kel smiled and spoke.

"Hero?"

No response. Kel chuckled until he looked down to see a puddle of blood at Hero's feet, with drops being added two at a time. Kel shuddered but pushed down the impossible. He smiled.

"Hey. You okay?"

He watched Hero's fingers twitch. He shuddered again. Then, turned Hero around, before taking a sharp gasp and stepping back. The others readied their weapons. Hero's face was gone.

Ripped clean off.

And a low groan came from him.

Kel already felt tears come to surface, but he knew what to do. He stepped back more and pulled out his gun, pointing at Hero as the figure came closer.

"Hero, it's me..."

Hero paid no attention. Sunny thought about running in to interfere, but steadied himself. He stopped Aubrey and Basil from interfering as well. Mari looked on with a hint of horror. She loved him, it was a different reason she wasn't horrified. The four watched as Kel backed up just for Hero to come closer.

"Hero...please..."

Kel's voice began to break. He didn't like this. Not at all.

"Hermano, it's your brother!"

Hero stayed silent. Kel closed his eyes and yelled, tears finally breaking.

"Henry Orlando Desoto, I'm sorry!"

He then pulled the trigger.

A loud bang,

then nothing.
