DARA HAD BEEN SURPRISED TO LEARN THAT Bobby had been the one to take Mavis home the night before, and even more surprised (if not suspicious) that Johnny had ended their interaction by being weird and strangely honest. Dara would have to consult Daniel and see what his opinion on the whole situation was. As far as she knew, Daniel was oddly perceptive when it came to their mutual friend.
Dara had been waiting for Mavis at her apartment, having used the spare key under the doormat to let herself in. Originally, she'd assumed her best friend would be home, but Mr. St. James let her know that Mavis had gone to someone's house party. Mavis wasn't the type to go to house parties or even other kids' houses, so her eyebrows were raised. She recognized Johnny's work and wondered how he'd managed to convince her to go out.
Bobby Brown had awkwardly waved as he dropped Mavis off at the complex, even waiting for her to enter the door before backing out and leaving.
But Mavis was suspiciously quiet about the exchange, what part Johnny had played during the night, and was too quiet and irritable herself. That's why Dara had decided to invite Daniel over the next morning so that they could all try to get to the bottom of Mavis' agitation.
Only, Daniel seemed to be unaffected by Johnny's recent actions towards their friend.
"I'm just glad he's laying off of me for a few days," Daniel admitted, sitting across from the two girls outside. They sat with their legs dangling over the pool even though there was no water in it. It was nice to pretend that they lived somewhere nicer sometimes. "Johnny's a weird guy, alright?"
"So you don't think it's suspicious that he's been talking to Mavis so often?" Dara asked him skeptically, prompting him to shrug. Daniel lightly rubbed the patch over his eyebrow from the most recent altercation. "That's not weird to you?"
"He doesn't even talk to me often at all," Mavis murmured, still stuck in a funk. Dara rolled her eyes.
"He wasn't even giving you the time of day until this year started."
"Yeah? Maybe he's trying to build connections before we graduate," Mavis said sarcastically. Dara scoffed at the mere idea of Mavis being a connection.
"Not to be blunt but we all know you're not the kind of connection somebody from the Hills is gonna run to," She said to her best friend, taking a bite out of a chocolate bar from the convenience store.
"He's burned a lot of bridges, maybe I was a last resort. Or maybe he needs to know a mechanic."
"As if Johnny Lawrence would keep hanging around just to talk to your dad," Dara laughed. "What do you think about that, Daniel?"
"Hm?" Daniel turned to them, oblivious. "Yeah, maybe."
Mavis and Dara looked at each other carefully. Obviously, he didn't much care about the conversation.
