Chapter 1

When I was a little girl, I used to dream about things like princes and princesses at nighttime. My dad always used to tell me stories about him and my mother. I remember dancing around my room with a broom pretending that it was my prince comes to sweep me off my feet.

Only now do I realize how wrong I really was.

Seventeen years later, my mum and dad are divorced and drop me off at different bus stations when it is time for the weekly switch. My boyfriend of two years cheated on me with the school’s biggest skank and my best friend is in love with my older brother.

So much for fairy tales and romance, there is nothing perfect about my life.

Everything used to be great. Now everything has changed. I used to think I’d wake up in the morning and it would all be okay but I’ve moved on now. I’ve woken up. I realize that fairy tales don’t exist. There’s no such thing as love. The quicker everyone believes that, the better.

“Hey Lacey, guess what?” Melanie asked me excitedly. Melanie and I have been friends since the start of high school and tell each other everything, there’s never a day when Mel and I aren’t sharing juicy gossip with each other.

“What?” I wondered opening my locker door and shoving my books inside.

“I’m going on a date this Friday!” She squealed in excitement.

I frowned. “Why?”

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Melanie roll her eyes. “Because Chase asked me to go to out with him and I said yes. Chase is like, hot!”

I looked at her and fought the edge to laugh. “You’re joking right? He has the IQ of a ten year old.”

“Look L if you’re not going to at least pretend to be happy for me then I’ll just tell Nat.” Mel warned.

I grabbed my bag and fixed the lock on my locker. “I’m sorry Mel but you know how I feel about things like that.”

Melanie watched as Lucas and Savannah walked past us. Savannah smirked and snuggled in closer to Lucas’s side and I stuck up my most used finger, the middle one.

“It’s okay L, he’s stupid. Savannah’s just a whore. Don’t worry about them. Lucas doesn’t know what he’s missing out on, you’re amazing babe.” Melanie assured me.

I smiled at her and shook my head. “I’m over that now. It doesn’t matter anymore I just don’t believe in love. I mean what good is it going to bring in life. You should be focusing more on your math homework and less on ‘hot’ guys.”

Natalie joined us and grinned. “What are you two arguing about this time?”

I consider Natalie my best friend. It’s not as if Mel’s isn’t totally awesome but Nat and I have been friends forever. She’s totally in love with my brother Liam. Liam’s two years older than I am and I love him to pieces. He has moved out of both houses and away from all of the shit that’s going down with our family. Sometimes I stay with him when I really can’t stand it anymore.

“Take a guess.” I smiled. “I bet you’ll get it.”

“Boys.” There, that one word always made me cringe. I got over boy and girl germs long ago but after everything that has happened, I’ve developed a passionate hate for most boys that Melanie completely disagrees with.

Melanie sighed. “She’s still going on with her stupid anti-love, anti-boys crap.”

Nat giggled and looked at me. “You know how defensive she gets when you say that boys are worthless.”
