Chapter 13

*Lacey*

I didn’t leave Melanie’s house over the weekend.

I couldn’t find the courage.

We mostly slumped around the house eating ice cream and watching old movies but eventually that got boring. Melanie dared Natalie to jump into the pool with her clothes on, tried to cheer me up by pushing her in and jumping herself, and even though I played along and dived in after them, my thoughts never really left Eli.

I couldn’t remember why I felt the need to tell him what I did but the truth is out now and there’s no taking it back. Sooner or later I will brave him and try again but right now I’m not really sure how.

School on Monday was awkward.

Although I didn’t speak to him or purposely run into him we still saw each other and I still didn’t know what to do when my eyes found his.

Natalie, Elijah and I are the only people that know about everything that happened. I haven’t told anyone else. Not mum, not Liam, not even Melanie. I was dead set against telling Nat but she insisted that she had to know. I figured I owed her an explanation after she took care of my pathetic state after the confrontation with Eli.

By Wednesday, I was almost successful at acting like everything was fine.

We had basketball practice for fourth period and I had to go through it acting like Elijah didn’t exist. It was hard. Pretending not to notice him always is. He just calls to me. Whenever he’s in the same room I am I always know where to find him.

*Elijah*

I couldn’t look at her.

I was too scared she’d catch me staring and everything that I felt would just tumble out my mouth in awkward sentences and random words.

I couldn’t decide whether to talk to her or not.

I don’t remember anything from the other night.

Except one thing, she told me she loves me. She admitted it to me.

And that was the reason that I was still walking the same halls as her and breathing the same air. If it weren’t for that one little detail, I’d be gone. The only reason I’m here is Lacey.

On Friday night, there was a call from downstairs.

“Elijah, there’s a girl here to see you!” My immediate thoughts were of Lacey.

But when I reached the last step, I was disappointed. It wasn’t her. It was Natalie.

“What are you doing here?” I asked warily. “She didn’t send you did she?”

Natalie shook her head. “No, I’m here by choice.”

“Why?” I knew I sounded weird but I didn’t care.

She sighed. “I knew you’d be like this. I just came to talk. Can we go somewhere to sit?”

I led her out the back and over to a park bench. “What do you want to talk about?”

“Lacey told me everything. She told me what happened and honestly, I think she’s being stupid. I just came here to tell you that it’s not you. She loves you Elijah. She’s new to this though and there’s a lot going on right now. She’d so stubborn and she’s probably scared you won’t feel the same even though everyone knows you do.” She mumbled it all.
