Chapter 12:
Cassandra's POV:

Chris leads me down the two flights of stairs and through some crowded hallways. Up ahead I see Rita standing by the entrance to the cafeteria. She's busy on her phone and doesn't notice us. Chris stands in front of her with his hands crossed. He clears his throat. Even the way he clears his throat is hot. Rita smiles before locking her phone and putting it away. She looks up at him and puts her arms around his neck. He leans in and kisses her.
Oh! Shit! I've been crushing on my best friend's boyfriend!
I stand there shocked as I watch them act all giddy - yuck. He pecks her on the cheek and heads off to his class. He winks at before he glides off.
"I see and you Chris met - again. I assume you saw him in drawing?" She says as she leads me into the cafeteria, then the lunch line.
"Yeah, uhh, so you and him are a couple?"
"Oh, haha, yeah." She says blushing. "We've been dating since last year. Our one year was in March."
"Oh, that's nice. What's his deal with the constant winking?" I ask hesitantly.
"What?"
"He, uhh - he's always winking at me when he talks to me. It's kind of flirtatious..."
She laughs and I'm taken aback.
"Oh! That! Haha, yeah that's nothing. You and Chris have known each other since first grade, too. You sort of looked up to him like he was a god when you were younger. He used to take advantage of that when you guys were growing up. The flirtatious thing he does is just to tease you, it's harmless though. Lots of his exes would get jealous saying that you two should just date but you guys are like siblings so that'd be weird." I nod along as she explains. We order our lunches and pay - a salad for me and a sub for her. She walks to a table located near the entrance doors. Before we reach the tables she huffs.
"That's Janice." She says nodding to a chick ahead of us.
"Which one?" I say noticing there are a few girls ahead of us.
"The one with straight black hair and demon brown eyes. She's wearing that stupid cheer outfit." I look forward again and see this Janice chick. She's pretty.
"Why such spite in your voice?"
"In elementary school she used to be our bestie - we were the three musketeers. She's in your grade. In middle school she acted like we were nobodies to her so she could work her way up the social ladder and be popular. She's a total bitch. Sadly, however, she's dating my idiot brother and I'm forced to deal with her and she's forced to deal with me." We near the table and Rita sits across from Janice and I sit next to Rita. A boy has his arm around Janice's waist. He looks at me and smiles. I smile back.
"Danny, she doesn't know who you are. And luckily for her she doesn't know who this bimbo is." Rita says glaring at Janice. Janice doesn't notice the glare and laughs a high pitched squeal.
"Oh, Danny, your sister is so funny!" Janice says leaning her head on his shoulder. He glances at me and blushes before turning back to his food. There's a few moments of silence while everyone eats. I study him while chewing on my pizza. He has shaggy brown hair, light brown eyes, some freckles on his cheeks, and the cutest dimples.
I need to stop crushing on everyone at this school!
As I eye over Danny I notice Janice looking at me.
"So, is it true you lost your memory?"
"Yep. Don't know any of you, mostly trust that Rita isn't feeding me lies." I say half joking, even though Rita's eyes widen briefly. Janice takes a moment to ponder this.
"So, like, I heard a rumor that you and Ryan Flent are dating, do you know anything about that?"
"Oh, yes, we are dating. According to him, we've been together for the last two weeks." Janice looks at me puzzled and Danny even looks up and gives Rita a look.
"Well, it's been really, really low-key." Rita blurts.
"Well, it's probably only been low-key because he didn't want to seem like a whore. I mean when he was a freshman he made out with half the student body. Then in sophomore year he gets together Veronica and yeah they were on and off the entire year up until last month when it was an official end. And two weeks after that official end he's with someone new, ha! I would keep that on the down low, too. And can you believe that they are still friends?" Janice says.
"They are still friends because it was a mutual break up. Ryan and Veronica were friends before they started dating so they are still going to be friends after." Rita says, either defending Ryan or just arguing with Janice.
"Veronica...I've heard that name before. Some blonde girl at the frozen yogurt place mentioned her." I say.
"That probably was Clarise, she's a gossip queen -" Rita starts.
"And my best friend." Janice adds causing Rita to roll her eyes.
A bell rings and everyone gathers their belongings and throws away their trash. Rita grabs my trash for me I thank her and reach for my schedule. Before I pull it out Danny tells me to just follow him because we have biology together. Janice and Rita are already out of sight so I head with Danny out of the cafeteria. We head to a set of stairs and then down a hallway. In the hallway I see Ryan leaned up against a locker talking to a girl with slick golden hair. Her hair bounces to her shoulder blades and she stands a little too close to Ryan. He seems to be gazing into her eyes and doesn't notice me pass him. As we keep walking I turn to look at the girl and she is smiling at Ryan. She has a cute button nose and light sparkly brown eyes.
"She's beautiful isn't she?" Danny says, noticing me staring. I turn back around and nod my head. The he adds, to my dread.
"That's Veronica."
