CHAPTER TWO

The Next Night

Makayla sucked her teeth loudly when she turned the corner and saw her father walking up the stairs to her old building where he, her mother, and her sister still resided. She kept walking down the block, hoping he wouldn't see her pass. But she also didn't care enough to turn around and go back in the other direction.

"Makayla!" he yelled when he looked over his shoulder and spotted her walking by.

She huffed loudly and glared at him. "What's up with you, nigga? You're yelling my gov mad loud for what reason, Michael?" She asked.

"What are you doing out so late? This is not proper behavior for a young lady. I hope you're not out here causing trouble."

"I'm not. I'm bout to go see Johnny and Chris."

"They're going to get you put back in jail, Makayla. You shouldn't even be hanging around those boys. All they do is cause trouble around this neighborhood."

"Those boys are your nephews and they always looked after me when your bum ass was out cheating on my mother and getting drunk instead of getting a job and raising your fucking kids. And I don't live under your roof anymore so don't worry about what I do, when I do it, or who I do it with."

"That was all in the past, Makayla. You need to let it go. The Lord says to forg—"

"Get your old ass in the building and get off my dick. It's too late for you to be out here. Old niggas get shot too," Kayla warned him before walking off, feeling her anger start to rise from interacting with her father.

Makayla and Micheal hadn't gotten along since she was about nine years old. The rift had a lot to do with how he treated her mother and his religious, hypocritical ways. She also felt he was the reason she even got involved in the streets since he failed to be the provider he should've been.

As for Michael, he didn't dislike her as much as she disliked him. But, he'd given up trying with Makayla since he had a younger daughter who was oblivious to his shortcomings and still idolized him.

"These kids are so damn disrespectful these days," her father grumbled lowly to himself before turning and entering the building.

Makayla stayed aware of her surroundings as she continued walking. She spotted Kay's car coming down the block towards her. She threw up the Sev to identify herself to him and he stopped the car once he got closer to her.

"Why you lacking pussy?" Kay yelled out of his passenger window.

"Who lacking? I could never!" Kayla replied as she pushed forward the gun in her sweatshirt pocket, making it visible to Kay.

"Get in," Kay said and she obliged.

"It's mad late and you're walking dolo. You got a car, Muddy," Kay said as he extended his arm toward Kayla once she was in the car.

They linked their fingers to do their handshake. Kayla pursed her lips when she felt a jolt of electricity go through her when their fingers touched.

"So? I wanted to walk. I'll never be scared to walk around my own hood."

"Was that your pops?" Kay asked as he drove off.
